MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
They already built it (the subsidized AMTRAK to Duluth). The subsidy cost more than a Greyhound ticket. And still, it died for lack of interest. It is hard to argue for dreams when the cold, hard facts of historical failure are staring you in the face.
This is the stupidest "mass" transit proposal since AMTRAK stopped running to Duluth due to lack of interest. The Twin Cities needs COMMUTER rail, not inter-city rail. The Northern Lights express should stop at Forest Lake.
As a Minneapolis resident, I am astounded at the drop in crime. Crime is the issue that led McLaughlin to challenge Rybak in 2005. Rybak and his police chief can take full credit for this drop -- it was due to their change in strategy, and not due to some random variation in data.
Rybak's opposition to Target's downtown expansion was misrepresented in the article. Rybak objected to the huge subsidy the City Council gave Target in order to get them to build downtown. I am sure that...
Very interesting article, Steve. This is the first I have heard of the Downtown Improvement District. Keep this up and I will start paying for my reading pleasure!
I live in Uptown, and I strongly support the 3A route. This route brings suburbanites to downtown without their cars, which reduces traffic through Hennepin and Lake for the rest of us. By catering to the needs of SW suburbanites, this route expands the constituency for mass-transit-oriented transportation solution. Do we really want to build more freeway lanes as our population grows?
In contrast, the Uptown LRT route is not a transportation solution. SW suburban residents do not...
I give Obama high marks for his accomplishments in changing the world's perception of the US. His speech in Cairo to the Muslim world put an end to the notion that the US would continue to fall into Bin Laden's trap of Christians vs. Muslims, winner take all. The U.S.A. BRAND is what's changed. I don't see any real accomplishments yet.
It's too early for a Nobel Peace Prize for Obama. There is no doubt he will earn this prize, but he hasn't yet.
Why do you care what the strib prints? I thought you guys were trying to be an (electronic) newspaper in your own right.
The Green Day song was what popped into MY head.
For those of us who are baseball fans, the new Twins stadium is a joy to behold. Baseball should be played outdoors, on real grass, and the spectators' seats should face the infield. Good riddance to the Metrodome.
Statewide instant run-off elections can't get here fast enough. The only reason Bachmann (and Pawlenty) won the last time is because of the IP candidate.
