Posted on 01/07/09 at 05:59 pm in response to Power Line to Coleman: your campaign stinks

Paul - If I read Johnson right, he's saying Coleman's lawyers had to shovel fast to fill the campaign's self-dug holes. So now he wants the lawyers fully in charge.

Alex, Kelly - I believe that typically, the Strib only "post-reviews" comments, as Kelly indicates, but in special cases, someone reviews comments before they're posted.

That seems to what's going on in the Pohlad case.

Bob - blogs there say Leveille got whacked. Rumor for now but couldn't find him on WBZ's schedule:

Posted on 12/30/08 at 08:15 pm in response to John Lott: Wrong again

Craig - I have to disagree with you strongly.

First, on the Strib, yes, they made a mistake - a very small one.

It was Lott who turned a typo into a towering case of Canvassing Board malfeasance. He LED his piece with this example. So the reason I picked on Lott instead of the Strib is all about proportion; the Strib's error was simply not in the same league as Lott's. We get paid to make judgments about what's important; I stand by this one.

When a writer is accusing a...

Posted on 12/22/08 at 12:29 pm in response to Recount: How Lott misleads

A few specific responses to John:

1. I'm glad he's changed examples, given the low quality of the originals. But NO ballots where Coleman's oval was the only one marked was counted for Franken. Period. I understand he's a bit bewildered by the SoS mark, but there's no mistaking the spreadsheet column of who the vote went for - not Franken.

2. His defense about the Nov. 10 FoxNews piece is too clever by half. The headline (Minnesota Ripe for Election Fraud) and first eight grafs...

Posted on 12/19/08 at 08:38 pm in response to Recount: How Lott misleads

Joel - I'm sure John Lott is a lovely fellow, but the guy throws out words like "fraud" and "systematic bias" at a moment's notice, based on sheer speculation the first time and evasions/inaccuracies the second.

In other words, he's wrong AND loud about it. (Systematic bias indeed.) Whatever his intent, the result is sliming the reputations of people who don't deserve it.

OK, I'll bite: who's Chad?

Posted on 12/17/08 at 09:53 am in response to Recount is no reason for this reform

Jason - I'm a strong believer in IRV and think Minneapolis is a great laboratory to find out if it works, or if the "fear, uncertainty, doubt" is unwarranted.

Two points:

1. Remember, the primary/general election system lets you pick a loser (if you candidate doesn't survive), then pick again. IRV just does it in a single election. Not so scary now, right?

Since primaries are low-turnout, IRV lets the most voters participate in the winnowing. General elections - the only...

Posted on 12/17/08 at 11:36 am in response to Power Line eulogizes Kersten column

Tom - I plead nolo contendre to the liberal charge.

That said, I think condescension is in the eye of the beholder. Referencing megachurches isn't automatically condescending, and wasn't in this case.

Instead, it's a thumbnail. Scott Johnson's argument for Kersten is she represents cultural conservatives, not just politico-economic conservatives. It's a fairly well-established fact that megachurchgoers comprise a major part of the cultural wing of the GOP.

Any shorthand...

Posted on 12/15/08 at 06:44 pm in response to Daily Glean: AP analysis gives Franken recount lead

Jim - I read the damn thing twice, but obviously substituted "no" for "scarce" since I didn't see any other "remaining" paddlewheelers listed.

That was my mistake; apologies and thanks for the correction. I need to know my paddlewheel scene better.
