Posted on 10/08/08 at 02:31 pm in response to Daily Glean: Petters' lament: I'd 'just rather gamble, drink and die'

BD - That's interesting. Another reader noted on yesterday's Glean that a Strib commenter sussed out the identity of the stoolie before the rest of the media.

So much for the, er, wisdom of crowds.

Tom -

Polls really ARE snapshots in time, but the good pollsters release their down-to-the-wire tracking polls even after the election so you can see the arc. And yes, damn humans and their mind-changing ways do screw things up. (Things seem extra volatile this year, BTW.)

Peter -

I'm no more gifted at divining the future than the next slob, but I'd say a) Barkley winning wouldn't shock me, especially this year and b) I don't think the Strib poll is as much an outlier as...

John -

Pollsters will tell you their numbers are snapshots in time, not necessarily (but certainly possibly) wrong given the ultimate results.

I remember working for Newsweek in 1998 and telling them right about this time that Ventura could win. (Didn't put any money on it, though.) It's entirely likely Barkley could come up along the rail and push Franken to last - one of the Strib results I question the most is that Barkley is currently drawing equally from D's and R's -...

Aw Sally, have I acquired a regular first commenter?

Can't argue my way into the style points, but while I love Nate at 538, he didn't have the crosstabs and thus, some of the analysis and explanation. That's what I'm trying to add to the party here.

The great thing about the Internet is one source does not corner the market.

Sally, I had you in the back of my mind writing this. ... here's to a sense of humor!

Posted on 10/06/08 at 09:33 am in response to Amid business troubles, Strib nabs a PiPress star

Sally - the Sun newspaper stories explicitly mentioned ECM's revenue decline (and disclosed MinnPost's partnership). However, the Sun's trouble is worse, given they are in default of lending agreements and the privately owned ECM is not.

Frankly, one reason I haven't done more on TV news rating declines is that Lambert has been all over that story, so I'm focusing on areas (daily papers) where I have more interest and insight.

(I've written a lot about TV journalism over the...

Sally -

It's paradoxical to note all those Strib web hits and then wonder why I write about them a lot. They remain the region's top (though far from only) news source, and as a media reporter, they're tops on my beat.

The future isn't promised to anyone, including MinnPost, but that's not really the point: we're not out to be a Strib replacement even if the Media Fairy tapped us with her magic wand.

It's important to cover the financial and journalistic goings-on of the...

Edward -

The fault is mine; Harte regularly talks of an "operating profit" - that means the operations produce positive cash flow BEFORE things like debt payments are figured in. (The common business jargon is EBITDA - earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization.)

It's an important distinction because a business that's operating profitably doesn't need to go back to the lenders it's not paying for MORE cash.

To be sure, not paying your debt has...

#2 - Erik: thanks for the good catch.

#3 - Mark: not quite sure how the NT turbine is rated, but ultimate production all depends on available wind resource and - especially deadly in an urban environment - turbulence. You need to have a fairly unencumbered piece of property to reach full efficiency, with unturbulent winds. I'm told fancy helical turbines are sold as turbulence-chasers, but at the cost of efficiency.

Posted on 09/26/08 at 11:44 am in response to 'Stay Out of Jail Free': a closer look at RNC embedding

Jason - I don't have a problem with reporters doing ridealongs, or the RNC-policing equivalent. I'm a wee bit concerned cops only dole these out to favored reporters - we know how access can be used as a weapon! - but I haven't really researched the broader topic.

Again, I think significant arrangements with those you cover should be disclosed - though reasonable people can disagree about what's reasonable.

To me, the notion that most of us were "embedded" with protesters is...
