Of course they will have to pay to park in Arden Hills. Why do you think Ziggy is so hot on the location?

I don't think the sales tax is as big a deal as David makes it out to be. I know I don't even think about it.

What killed Block E is very, very, VERY poor urban design, period. It's a perfect demonstration of everything NOT to do when designing an urban building. It's downright pedestrian unfriendly. Let me count the ways:

1. No street-level windows (or what's there is papered over). This kills any street ambiance and research shows it encourages petty crime.

2. No...

I think one of the reasons our urban design is so poor is we do not look outside of ourselves. Spend a week in Vancouver without touching a car or bus. It's really easy to do! We walked everywhere when we were out there. It's a very dense city but feels very open. This is due to smart design choices. Many buildings have a gradiated height. At the sidewalks they are two stories, a bit further back, three stories, then four a bit further back from that, then, and only then, do they...

This is the worst possible outcome. Berg has a great story about our need for compact development and now we're going to build a huge new complex out in the middle of nowhere?

I would like to know if Mr. Frank has some ideas about how to do development around bus lines. Historically, it's been difficult to do for a few reasons, primarily because it is not a permanent corridor the way rail is. There is also the very real rail preference bias in mode choice.

Since I don't see us as a state making a strong commitment to rail in the next ten years, I'm hopeful that we can figure out some way to leverage our bus system better than we have in the past.

This monstrosity is definitely on my list of unsalvageable buildings. If it did not house immigrants, relatively poor people and others of communities that are traditionally disadvantaged I'd certainly want it torn down ASAP. To me it represents everything that went wrong with the Urban Renewal movement of the '60's and '70's.

Other buildings on my wrecking ball list include the Multifoods tower, the Metrodome and Block E.

The list is also likely to include any new Vikings...

Kenilworth is exactly the right choice for Southwest. The primary reason is that it serves North Minneapolis, a community desperately in need of good transit service. It opens up a whole new corridor of jobs to those folks and while I agree with your view that transit ought to talk our whole lifestyle into account, we can't deny the need to provide access to jobs to those who need them the most.

With the Uptown alignment, we would have effectively said we'll spend $...

I'm not so sure about this borrowing scheme for several reasons.

Federal highways get 80% of their funding from the federal government, while as noted Central Corridor and other New Starts projects only get 50%. So already transit is at a huge disadvantage to freeways. Now Los Angeles is basically saying they don't think they can even get 50%. Federal transportation dollars are being shifted into an EVEN MORE unbalanced system than they are now.

Borrowing against future tax...

@Karen

People have been clamoring for better suburban bus service for years and years. And I agree we need it badly.

However, we apparently aren't willing to pay for it. No one wants to pay for 15-minute headway bus service when "all I see are empty buses on the road." Unless and until suburban residents make their elected officials want it enough, it ain't gonna happen. That's where the political power is right now so that's where the leadership is going to have to come...

Royalston is a huge bus transfer point right now. I believe it serves more vehicles than the Uptown station does. This is the gateway to jobs for the Northside.

Van White is important for a couple of reasons. One, it will support the Bassett's Creek master plan, which calls for infill development in the Linden Yards area. Second, the promised Van White extension over 394 will provide some of the connectivity now missing. This is one of the prime areas for...
