MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
I recently met with my representative, Peggy Scott, to discuss gun violence. Her emotional reaction to the marriage equality vote does not surprise me. What did astound me at our meeting was her declaration that, "I never read the StarTribune." In the political arena, it is important to consider all the aspects of an issue before making a decision and casting a vote. How can a representative make an informed decision when she does not read the largest newspaper in the state even though...
And...could there be anything more important than money in this debate?
On the other hand, I believe the voters of Minnesota deserve to know where their elected representatives stand on the use of background checks for controlling gun violence. Speaker Thissen, needs to show the leadership that his position demands and bring this bill to the floor.
Many of us in the DFL party have determined we will not give money to any member of the DFL caucus who does not vote for background checks.
No vote; no money!
Legislators can change their minds about legislation until their vote is recorded. This decision is about future elections. I wonder if there will be any gun deaths that could have been avoided before the next legislative session.
I do agree though that " it's the responsibility of those we elect to actually make legislation."
I was told by three different legislators at the capitol yesterday that this was indeed political cover for the Democrats. For the first time, I am ashamed to be a member of that party. Speaker Thiessen has determined it is more expedient to protect his collegues' political capital than the lives of Minnesota citizens. How can voters make an informed decision on this issue when there is no recorded vote?
Senator Hahn at one time said he had not received an email from a sibgle constituent on the importance of a bill against gun violence. I asked an Eden Prairie friend who supported a gun control bill why she had not emailed him. Her response was,"he would not listen."
Why was there no mention of Melissa Hortman's record on environmental votes? She is the new Chair of the House Energy Committee.
I attended an Anoka-Hennepin School Board meeting devoted to the "neutrality" issue and was appalled by the bullying the PAL members exhibited at the meeting. I have unfortunately seen much of this bullying behavior in the Anoka County Watchdog. It is no wonder the children of the PAL mimic what their parents displayed at this meeting. There was much Bible thumping, and "ain't it awful" scenarios threatened if the school board did not adhere to the PAL members' demands.I wish my school...
Alice Johnson in Senate District 37 also returned as a former legislator. Alice first served in the House, admirably serving as the Chair of the Education Committee. She returns as a Senator with a host of leadership skills. One would hope that those leadership skills and years of service will catapult her to a leadership position in the Senate.
The last two days of the campaign I called identified supporters for Mn United for All Families; everyone I called was under the age of 43. I am 73. This amendment bridged the generations.
