MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
"Through no fault of their own, county, city, and township officials will feel the wrath of taxpayers as taxes are raised and services reduced."
It is your fault if you voted for the local democrat politicians who would raise your property taxes in a recession.
I want to see the actual figures and what percentage increase it represents. I also want to see why Dayton absolutely had to have that extra $1.4 billion shifted from other purposes and exactly how it will be used.
He could have had this deal two weeks ago and he put thousands of people out of work for nothing.
Nowhere in his letter or in the news accounts is any actual dollar amount mentioned. So what are they going to spend in this budget as opposed to the last budget? That might be an interesting bit of news, don't you think?
Seems to me these liberal groups should be pressuring the liberal governor, not the conservatives. If they want to settle the budget debate, they should be pressuring the person who might agree with them.
"For his part, Dayton called a lights-on approach “a ploy.”"
I know my neighbor who was laid off from her state job doesn't consider it a ploy. This is the problem when you have a governor who is wealthy without having earned it. He has no empathy for the people who he put out of work.
"They say evoking the Gospel story of Jesus multiplying loaves and fishes for a hungry crowd will illustrate the need for lawmakers to "ask those who have done well to make small sacrifices so that we can invest in those who've been hurt most by the economic downturn," the religious leaders said in a statement."
I suggest these "religious leaders" re-read their bible. Jesus didn't get the loaves and fishes from people in the crowd and neither did he get the loaves and fishes from...
"But we must be willing to share the abundance. The extremely fortunate among us are not."
But they are. Go to a food shelf or Second Harvest and see who is donating and volunteering there. It's conservatives.
"In response to his attacks on Bachmann's limited accomplishments, her supporters can ask, "How many orphan children have you adopted?""
Actually, it's been, "Regardless, she still has more legislative accomplishments than Barry did and not nearly as many "present" votes."
The only mention of pornography in that pledge is to "protect [children] from human trafficking, sexual slavery ... pornography and prostitution ... and other forms of stolen innocence."
So in other words, C.S. Senne, City Pages and Minnesota Independent are outraged that Bachmann vows to do whatever she can to protect children from being used in prostitution and child pornography. I wonder why they would oppose that?
The rumor is that democrats are going to suggest saving money by cutting payments to Medicare providers. That would be counterproductive if they really want to avoid hurting seniors as they say they do.
Many doctors are already refusing to take on new Medicare patients because of the reduced reimbursement. That trend will increase if their payments are cut even more. We've been with the same family doctor for 30 years. When he retires and we're forced to find a new doctor, will...
