I hope this doesn't degenerate into which group is more at fault, but I have to agree that bikers seem to want it both ways. They tend to be incensed at any car that doesn't yield to them (and they often have a point), but then proceed to roll through stop signs and stop lights a few seconds later. I was running across a crosswalk by lake Nokomis on Friday, and nearly got plowed into by a biker who apparently felt the stop sign (and the laws regarding pedestrians in crosswalks) applied to...

I don't think the Republicans are much of a complement to Obama, nor would they ever knowingly compliment him

Posted on 07/23/12 at 09:20 pm in response to Bachmann comments throw 'silent' Reince Priebus, GOP off message

Huh? "a state party that’s survived a financial crisis"? Shouldn't they pay their creditor and be in the black before you declare this mess to be behind them?

Posted on 07/19/12 at 10:03 am in response to Food trucks enjoy unfair advantages as they scoop up lunch business

Mr Sams or Ms Harris is getting their facts wrong-- Sams claims that trucks have no obligation to have a certified food manager on site. Harris says otherwise in her article.

A quick google search finds the food truck application form (here: http://www.minneapolismn.gov/...

I think there is a fundamental problem in this analysis, which assumes that patients are making active choices with their health-care dollars.

In some cases, they are. When a person opts to have a LASIK procedure performed so that they can see without glasses, that is an active choice.

But in many, and I would say most, patients are not choosing for more care/spending thinking that they will get more or better life. They do things either because their doctor tells them they...

Nice write-up for a great guy. Thanks.

Posted on 06/18/12 at 10:47 am in response to Strib: Time for a universal motorcycle helmet law

If personal choice and appeal to tourists trumps safety (which is what your last 2 paragraphs imply), why stop at allowing helmet-less riders?

Let's bring back the "whatever is reasonable and prudent" speed limit Montana used to have. Lets embrace texting and driving-- what better way to express yourself than sending a picture of yourself cruising down I-94 at 100 mph, with your hair blowing in the wind? And heck, if we're going all-in for tourism, and deciding that public-health be...

Posted on 06/15/12 at 08:52 am in response to Commentary: 'Device tax' will cost money, jobs ... and lives

Mr Eckberg-- could you enlighten us as to which medical device company is naive enough to pay a tax rate of over 50%?

It's not Medtronic: https://www.massdevice.com/news/irs-wants-medtronic-pay-958m-tax-tab

"Medtronic paid income taxes at a rate of 16.8% in 2011, less than half of the standard federal rate of 35% for...

Yes, the tax code should be simplified. Of course, both parties have had simultaneous control of both chambers and the presidency in the last decade, and it hasn't happened, so that should give us all an idea of how realistic that is.

But frankly, that's an issue that affects average citizens, who are doing our taxes with turbo-tax or a local accountant. It's a pretty poor argument to raise regarding corporate taxes, since they have the means to create/buy them, and lobby to maintain...

Posted on 06/14/12 at 10:02 am in response to Minnesota Senate to get hit with another Brodkorb defense legal bill

Nice of Brodkorb and Senjem to keep this in the news, and remind people that actions, not words should be looked at come election time.

For a party that likes to scream about fiscal restraint, family values, and frivolous lawsuits, this circus is an embarrassing trifecta.

I'm surprised the republican caucus hasn't come up with a way to pay this bill with some sort of legal-fund that they could fill from donors. Perhaps there's no way to do so, or perhaps the party is in such...
