Mr. Swift,
Here is the same story reported by the conservative newspaper, the Australian. It is owned by Rupert Murdoch. You may find the reporting helpful, and as an obvious counterbalance to the perceived liberal bias you suggest exists at Yahoo. As other posters have pointed out, even this conservative take says the findings are only helpful, but will not change warming predictions because the plants will eventually give up in the biological process, the CO2 that the plants have...

Dave Thul,
Gravity is a theory. Electricity is a theory. Don't confuse the everyday notion of theory with "scientific theory." That CO2 causes a disruption in infrared rays is not theory but a fact. No scientist disagrees with it. 99% of scientists believe the planet will warm with increased CO2. 2% of them quibble over the effects. 1% of scientists think the premise is a hoax. If you are a bettin' man, where do you put your money?

Gregory,
I have been reporting on the Bakken Formation and the Williston Basin for some years. I did the first reports on television. There is a lot of oil there. Current technology, according to the USGS, allows something near 1% recoverable. It is not a solution. It also involves fracking technologies and those are coming under increased scrutiny for contamination of ground water supplies. Bakken oil is already on the market. It has done little to bring down the price.

Gregory,
This was a story about a good leader who broke the mold. If his windpower initiatives were "do-gooderism on the Xcel consumers "dime," as you say, would it surprise you that wind is Xcel's least cost generating source? The regulations you speak of were exceeded by this man's leadership.

Dear Patrick,
The rough count was 2000 walleyes over seven days. Bought four back for eating. Had walleye for breakfast, lunch and dinner the whole trip. Glad you were moved by the story. You are a youth. One day you will feel old. May that day be a long time off.

And, to Ray,
Thanks for wading through a memory. Basketball and fishing had little to do with the memory. You got that.

Patrick - 2000 walleye. Now, I'm sorry I gave he name of the lake. I...

To #1. Your point on the Maunder Minimum is timely. The news is all over the place and we journalists typically jump on the new thing. However, this is an old subject. in 1994 the National Academy of Sciences panel estimated that if a new solar minimum approached the level of 17th century low, the effect would be offset by two decades of CO2 loading in the atmosphere. A 2010 study showed by the late 21st century the Maunder Minimum would be offset by just one decade of continued CO2...

Ryan,
For you and others, I might have included in the article that 2/3rds of the restaurants in the US and 80% of those overseas recycle the oil for biofuels and other aftermarket products.

Adam, and other posters.
I apologize for the offense. I was invoking an old saying to conform to the war metaphor. And, I think I preceded the sentence introducing the NDRC website as saying, I seldom believe anything the authorities say. However, the technology comparisons are not from the Chinese. There are several independent energy and economics sites which report the same facts.
To those who, including Bill Gates, who suggest that it doesn't matter, we disagree. It is...

To Posters, in no particular order. First, some of you have correctly pointed out that I didn't show proper understanding of his disease by refer, in the last graph, to his display being "mildly amusing." I lived through the kind of craziness he is displaying, and you are right, there is nothing amusing about it. My mistake.
To those who take me to task for not putting any "news" in the piece - that was intentional. I am not an expert on economics and have no desire to influence...
