Posted on 03/29/13 at 01:59 pm in response to Vikings stadium buyer’s remorse? I’ve got it bad — do you?

The Metrodome is in use almost every day, and such frequent use of the new stadium was part of the deal. I don't understand why stadium opponents refuse to get it out of their heads that it's used only for Vikings games. If gambling doesn't bring in enough revenue, the there's already at ticket tax in the law, and that's the more fair way to pay for it anyway. Put a tax too on concessions, parking, and especially luxury suites if more revenue is needed. Those using the stadium would be...

is the success the gun industry lobbyists have had in prohibiting record keeping and research. I can only guess they prefer that we argue about guesses and impressions and anecdotes instead of data. That doesn't prove anything, but when one side wants to stop research, that sure suggests they already know they wouldn't want the findings coming out.

Posted on 01/29/13 at 03:13 pm in response to Dayton’s controversial ‘snowbird tax’ may not fly

We have people who want to be in Minnesota for the good things we have here, and then claim residency in a place with low or no income taxes so they don't have to help pay for it. Rather than negotiating with himself and pre-compromising, I'm glad Dayton offered what he thinks makes sense. The nits I'd pick aren't the same as other people's nits, so I say just pass it as proposed. I'll tolerate some imperfection in a pretty good tax reform.

Posted on 01/29/13 at 03:05 pm in response to Klobuchar looks to increase visas as part of immigration reform

It's probably overall good for the country to allow in more highly skilled and educated workers, and it doesn't make sense to educate them here and then kick them out. A problem with H1-B is the workers are tied to one employer. That's bound to depress wages, and I doubt very much many employers really just couldn't find someone in America when they bring in someone on H1-B. I'd even be open to dropping the requirement that the employer can't find an employee here, but then the foreign...

always have to come from Wall Street? It's like they get their own government department that just happens to affect all of us. Still, could Lew be worse than Geithner?

Do we know why conspiracy theory thinking is so heavily among conservatives currently? Even 911 truth has been taken over by the Infowars nutballs.

Why are we mucking around with these tax benefits for commuting? About a third of the stimulus was some form of tax credit or tax cut, which was a waste of a third of the stimulus. Car drivers would have benefited from catching up on road maintenance. Mass transit riders would have been better served by bigger fare subsidies and improving our bus and rail lines. Bike commuters have benefited from nothing so much as designated lanes. Set up more bike racks or open a repair shops in areas...

that libraries are protected, and the people have a right to keep books in libraries and have access to them. It wouldn't imply getting to keep books anywhere else. Fortunately the 1st Amendment makes the intention clear on keeping books individually. So directly to your point, state militias can't be disarmed, and members who have to supply their own arms would seem to have a right to keep them. Outside of militia service however, there's no implication of an unrestricted individual right....

Crime is down in general, so much so that big cities are hardly more dangerous than anywhere else now, and our crime rates look like other western nations. But our gun crime doesn't. We had about 10,000 gun homicides last year, while Britain had about 60. Those numbers are rough but double Britain's gun homicides while halving ours, and the picture is the same. And Britain is typical of other western countries, not us. The fact is our crime is much more lethal than anyone else's, and it's...
