Posted on 01/29/09 at 02:42 pm in response to House passes stimulus package

Every morning the papers report more job losses, more bankruptcies and store closings, more grim earnings statements like 3M's today. Why does anyone think we're not already in a disaster? I'm scared of this plan, too, but I see no counter plan from the Republicans who object to this package. They're just hoping Obama will fail (thanks Rush Limbaugh) in anticipation of that massive voter backlash Ms. Shell looks forward to.

What about the pain we're suffering RIGHT NOW? Are all the...

I hesitate to add anything to these comments and analyses, because I have no expertise to offer. You've all convincingly made the point that we must design a new tax system that pays the bills and protects the poor.

But that will take time, and right now I think we have to add revenue quickly. Other states impose taxes on food and clothing above a certain dollar amount. It wouldn't be hard to tax more luxury food and clothing items; store computers already differentiate taxable...

Posted on 01/05/09 at 03:10 pm in response to Senate recount outlook: Here are some real lollapaloozas

Yes, thanks for a masterly account. Mr. Lopez is also correct in his judgment that the Repubs, led by our governor, will do all they can to slow any momentum in Obama's program.

This mess has been well handled, but not expertly handled. Face it, the MN Sup Ct's prescription for dealing with the rejected absentee ballots was guaranteed to put us in this position. Justice Page, who had to uphold the process in his statement today, was quite clear about its impracticality when he...

Posted on 12/18/08 at 01:51 pm in response to Deficit spending: Why shouldn't Minnesota do as the feds do?

Thanks to Mr. Schulz, Ms. Blauvelt and Mr. Poe. I am so tired of hearing what is un-Minnesotan, as if we were a monolith of Scandinavian farmers, circa 1885.

First, please distinguish between deficit and debt. Even those iconic farmers must run their businesses on deficits, sometimes for more than 2 years, till better times can restore equilibrium. Keynes was right.

Posted on 12/16/08 at 03:00 pm in response to Strib stupid move: Dumping Kersten and Coleman

You quote Scott Johnson who says Kersten: "speaks for many in Minnesota who now are voiceless in the mainstream media." That's a crock. Voiceless? We get so much right-tainted reporting - and selective reporting - that thorough, responsible journalism is a dim memory.

As for Kersten, if she's the best local conservatives can offer, they should be ashamed. She sees through a Catholic keyhole. She's a zealot. Shes' so predictable she's boring.

Coleman is another story, in...

We all need to take this piece as a heads-up. Gov. Pawlenty really doesn't understand money. It isn't real, in the sense of gold coins. What is real is the full faith and credit of the U.S. government which will have to direct our economy in order to dig us out of this mess. Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman addressed the deficit fears clearly in a recent column:

"Right now there's intense debate about how aggressive the United States government should be in its attempts to turn the...

Posted on 11/10/08 at 03:02 pm in response to FiveThirtyEight.com: Franken may be recount's 'prohibitive favorite'

By "not properly completed" you mean errors made by new voters, elderly voters, disabled voters, or - what exactly? people who you think should not have the right to vote?

If a person makes an X rather than fully filling in the oval, or uses his own pencil rather than the special pen, that person will have cast a clear and unmistakeable vote. The problem is with the machine or with insufficient voter education.
We need voter education and registration of high school seniors...

It ain't over till it's over. The current margin is 462 in Coleman's favor. This is going to be a long haul. If I weren't so tired I'd be relishing such a nugget of election drama. Maybe tomorrow.

This amendment is not the ideal, but we've been held hostage by radical rightwing hoarders for too long. They have no vision, no appreciation for what a remarkable state this is. We have no choice if we want to haul ourselves out of the slide into mediocrity they've driven.

//Of course, the Taxpayers League and the No Sales Tax Increase. group, fronted by former U.S. Sen. Rod Grams, emphasize the tax over the content of the amendment.... on its Web site, the Taxpayers League and...

I'm really sorry Mr. Gotzman feels that way. Amy endorsed Al because he supports moral positions. That might sound odd, because he's acknowledged writing off-color satires and skits. But he is a MORAL man. He belives in protecting the least among us, the poor and uninsured and under-educated who can't afford to improve their skills and make a secure living.

Anyone who goes to movies or watches cable television knows that the world is no longer like "Leave It to Beaver." Maybe it...
