Choosing ignorance over evidence is a routine strategy for the Republicans. All you need to do is look at their current set of "No's" and their reasons.

Hannah: No, it's not too complicated for you. This is useful census material that tells us not just population but all kinds of characteristics that are necessary for cities, state, and federal government to assess and plan for. If there are a lot of young people in an area, that might mean more schools are needed. If there are a lot of elderly, a different kind of response is needed. It helps us with figuring out economic issues, social issues, all kinds of things.
Go back and take a...

Posted on 12/14/10 at 06:53 pm in response to Sobering report details big problems with long-term care in Minnesota

Another reason some of us don't buy it is the cost. I had it for a couple of years but the cost grew exponentially. It was perhaps not a good program. Now I simply cannot afford it. For several years, my mother and the three of us children were buying long-term care for her, but the costs became so high it was simply not sustainable.
Some of us do understand what's coming. We just can't afford to do what we should do. Younger people have a chance to buy policies that are much more...

Tom Swift: Thanks. Another laugh for the day.

"Contemptuous of the voters of Minnesota" pretty much says it all.
Where are our Elmer Andersons and our Luther Youngdahls and our Freemans and our Stassens and our Wendy Andersons (notice that all but Wendy and Freeman are Republicans, who would not get nominated much less elected today). These are and were men of stature, and they were part of a big pool of intelligent, experienced, educated people of integrity who did have Minnesota voters and values at the center of their work....

I agree, but why is this so? Why do so many Republicans not seem to care about a democracy of integrity and truthfulness. Sure, Democrats cross the line too often, but they are not the most egregious players in contests and campaigns and attempts to get their way in policies.

I'm glad we have such a strong advocate for honest and transparent elections. People need to know that their vote got counted. That has not been the case in some recent elections, and I don't mean this one.
With people nl8ke Halvorson and Mark Ritchie helping the recount process, I feel satisfied that it is being honestly and from a non-partisan stance.

Posted on 11/19/10 at 01:20 pm in response to At emotional hearing, Minneapolis homeowners demand lower property taxes

I saw no reference to the reason for soaring property taxes: these are the result of Pawlenty's "no new taxes" ideology. When people yell "Taxed enough already," do they have any idea what they are asking for? No. Like the people who said they didn't want a health care "takeover" (which it's not) but added, "Don't touch my social security. This is what happens when we lose sight of anything other than, literally, our own front yard. When we quit caring about our whole neighborhood, our whole...

Posted on 11/19/10 at 01:53 pm in response to Debate over judicial elections gets rowdy at Humphrey Institute

Now that we've seen the results of Minnesota's recent election with millions of partisan dollars trying to sway voters one way or another, the case for appointment/retention is stronger. We've already seen enough of this at the US supreme court level.
I vote for appointment/retention but trying to take some of the partisanship out by convening an independent panel (yes, it can be done) to make assessments and judgments. Perhaps this panel can then recommend 2-3 candidates for each...

Too bad Mondale didn't get elected. Opening doors should be what America is all about--but it's increasingly shutting them down. Not just in immigration but in ability to get a higher education, for example, and often, for that matter, a high school education. Diversity used to be our key,but it's not anymore. More and more the rich are keeping as much as they can for themselves.
