If we can spend that much money for a "people's stadium" (ha!), why can't the state help subsidize the critical arts institutions in our Twin Cities. Like the Minnesota Orchestra and the SPCO and maybe a few others. These institutions make us a great place to live and are one reason companies and people in general like to live here. I don't know that that many people want to come here to go to the "people's stadium" games.
The last figures I read indicate that more people attend things...

This is the hoary old argument republicans bring out as one reason for their opposition to new tax proposals, But it's not true and it doesn't mean $250,000.
Internal Revenue Service statistics indicate that only 3 percent of small businesses would be subject to the higher tax, and many studies of previous tax increases suggest that it would have minimal impact on hiring.
The Joint Committee on Taxation reported that 97 percent of all businesses owners do not earn enough to be...

The working poor and middle class people retire early all the time. Some may because they are comfortable enough with income from other sources, but many workers retire because of health problems, physical problems, inability to do the job they've been doing for years because of physical problems. The body doesn't start breaking down after age 67 or 69. And it doesn't break down evenly. If you're loading trucks with 50 lbs or more of crates, you are not going to be able to do that when you...

This sounds like one of the most hopeful approaches to solve the gap between blacks and whites. It sounds not only doable, but within reach within a few years--not a couple of generations.

Posted on 11/26/12 at 03:44 pm in response to New study stirs up controversy (again) about breast cancer screening

I wish something more had been written about overtreatment. In the '90s, I had a mastectomy, thinking it was my best option after learning I had cancer in my breast. I had two male doctors, an oncologist and a surgeon, who thought my decision was good. But the more I read, the more I realize I probably didn't have to do anything. It was so tiny and in situ and at the very least I could have waited to find out if it needed treatment. One reason I decided on this was that I would not need any...

Posted on 11/06/12 at 03:11 pm in response to Early voting reports: long lines and hour-long waits

I voted at Jimmy Lee recreation center on Lexington and Iglehart and there were lines, not long, but it looked like it could have been better organized. The only line was for the M-R (I think it was) while the 3 others places had no lines. But I was happy to see the numbers and when I voted about 11 or so, my vote was 1071.
There are fewer polling places but I don't know what redistricting has to do with it. I used to vote at what is now Obama Service School, then was moved to MLK...

Posted on 11/02/12 at 11:08 am in response to The marriage amendment and people of faith

This is all based on what many people believe is the truth of the Bible--so it doesn't apply to those of us who don't believe the Bible has the answers. Or don't necessary believe in god. If you want to privately disagree with same-sex marriage, go right ahead, but don't block the way for the rights of those who want same-sex marriages.
This constitutional amendment is flying in the face of all the changes in our society about homosexuality especially since the 1960s. Most younger...

Yay
! Love seeing all these names.

I just saw a sign on a big truck in the Sears parking lot that read something with this meaning: Catholics who vote NO on the marriage amendment are counterfeit catholics.

Maybe we need another Martin Luther to post 95 theses about abuses of Christian church doctrine and abusive practices by the Catholic church and ceremonies with all the religious decked out in regal white, gold and red, and gilded props like a shepherd's crook, I wonder at how far these men have strayed from Jesus' simple doctrine: Love thy neighbor. Don't need fancy clothes or a rich cathedral to do that.
