I always appreciate Marlys Harris's MinnPost articles, reading them regularly. I do, however, disagree with the lead in this particular story -- are downtowns doomed? This feels like a lead from the 1970s, and would have been an appropriate question at that time. Yes, there is the concern over Macy's in downtown St. Paul, as well as the meaning of Neiman Marcus's departure from downtown Minneapolis. But those two issues speak more to the future of department stores than urban centers....
The question is one, ultimately, of allowed height versus sprawl. At this point in this city's development, if we want to grow in numbers and in tax base, we need to grow UP. There is very little room available for infill. Go to St. Paul and take a look at Mears Park in Lowertown, arguably one of America's most beautiful square-block parks. David, thanks for saying what needed to be said regarding Block E.
Wow... I haven't read an article in a long time in which someone is irrelevantly described as "dark-skinned" and a woman is described as "bright" and "attractive." Interesting bit of retro-style journalism within the cyber realm. I understand that Journalist Black is trying to show the differences between 3rd Congressional District candidates Madia and Bonoff -- especially in regards to the homogenity of Hennepin County's western suburbs -- but there must be a more contemporary way of...
