Round-trip airfare, MSP to O'Hare, is $160-190 at the moment. It's a 1:30 minute flight. Amtrak is an 8 hour trip, at about $160 round-trip. I can't imagine that a bullet train would cost less, given the capital costs. So, what exactly is the advantage? Are we to expect that bullet trains will not be subjected to the same type of security procedures used for air traffic? What will the energy and pollution costs be for construction of the system?

Not every part of the country is...

The cynic in me cries out to know whether the governor has ordered flags flown at half-mast every December 7 or simply this one, when he's busy grooming himself for a run for higher office. A follow-up, perhaps?

Two points:

Yes, you can challenge a rule on the ground that it conflicts with the terms of the applicable statute or exceeds the rule making authority granted by the applicable statute. In fact, you have no right to challenge a rule until it affects or is about to affect your rights.

Of course the Republicans want to cherry-pick the counties involved, for precisely the reasons discussed above: any truly random selection of ballots on a statewide basis is likely to very...

Scott Johnson's piece on Koua Fong Lee is a bit more than I can take.

The fact is that Mr. Lee's conviction was overturned on two grounds, new evidence and poor representation at trial. While the latter is no barrier to a second prosecution, the points missed by his defense counsel the first time around are, particularly when combined with the arguments regarding sudden acceleration.

One of the points that would have been made in a second trial is that, contrary to the...

@Mr. Salute:

I'm not clear on your point. If, as you say, Ms. Duniway is the primary earner in her household, are you suggesting that Mr. Brauer would sacrifice his own career prospects to keep that income flowing? Seems a reach to me.

If you are challenging Mr. Brauer's statement that he doesn't know who her clients are, as a general matter, let me assure you that my spouse has no idea who I represent or when that representation might affect her employer or even co-workers...

Posted on 11/16/10 at 08:49 pm in response to Pawlenty preps with op-ed in Manchester Union Leader

I'll take Governor Pawlenty seriously as a presidential candidate when he names his own party as a co-conspirator in his open-bar scenario and pledges to never again use the meaningless phrase "special interests".

"By the way, equating homosexuality (a behavior) with skin color (an immutable characteristic over which we have no control) is ludicrous on its face."

I suggest that Mr. Swift be clear about differentiating between the position of his church (that homosexual attraction itself is "objectively disordered"*) and valid scientific studies of human sexuality, which indicate that human sexuality, like all other aspects of hard-wired human preferences, consists of an entire continuum of...

Perhaps someone can remind me why the Roman Catholic Church considers homosexuality a sin or oppose gay marriage?

From the current Catechism of the Catholic Church (http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/p3s1c1a8.htm#II)

II. THE DEFINITION OF SIN

1849 Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine...

Why is the GOP taking such a hard line? Because they want it all.If Rep. Emmer has any integrity, he'll stop with the automatic recount unless there is substantial evidence that would likely result in a change in the outcome. The party be damned.

I see many charges made and no evidence offered in support of any of them. Whatever merit the arguments may have will have to be learned elsewhere.
