This isn't only true in Minnesota, but most people don't have a very good sense of humor. They can't tell a joke. They can't laugh at a joke. They take offense when none was intended. Or they laugh at the misfortune of others. I've heard more Minnesotans laugh together at a waitress dropping a tray than I have at "A Prairie Home Companion."

And when you take off of the table those things that Minnesotans REALLY don't like to laugh about, you've removed all religion, all outdoor...

A poll that asks people to tax themselves or make unexplained and indistinct tax cuts will ALWAYS show people don't want taxes. How about if the poll asked: Would you rather see a 1 percent tax hike on people making more than $75,000 a year or would you like to close a third of the state parks, lay off 15 percent of all teachers, kick the poor out of nursing homes and raise tuition at colleges by 25 percent?

In terms of free, it means that if your parents have zero money, they get to go to school, too. I realize someone has to pay for it and most of us do. But if it isn't free, that means the poor are forever trapped in poverty. This way, they have opportunity.

I don’t expect school boards and administrators to do anything except do what is right. I don’t care if they show it or not. What I do care is if they fold because of loud opposition by a small group of bigoted zealots. When I vote for a school board member I expect a little bit of a backbone. They have a duty to do the best things for the students, not their crazy parents.

I’ll be writing my local superintendent in Spring Lake Park with those sentiments.

Joe Nathan is so good at what he does, we forget it is NOT automatic that the Twins win when he goes out there in the eighth or ninth inning. Look at all the time the Twins shell other teams' closers. So he had a bad day. He's still an All Star and one of the reasons the Twins are in second place in what could be a close finish with Detroit.

Michele Bachmann is first and foremost a nut. She attracts other nuts and says nutty things that make the nuts happy. She offers nothing - zero - in the way of legitimate government proposals - even conservative ones.

The problem is in these situations is police adopt an: "Arrest them all and let God sort them out" mentality. There really is zero effort to determine right or wrong or find perpetrators and separate them from regular people during the event. What a police chief wants, politically, is no riot in his streets. The easiest way to do that is just clear the streets. Then, after they've had a sleepless night in the worst form of housing in the civilized world, let them out. They're going to go...
