MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
As usual, Mr. Swift is working hard to forward some of the distorted right wing memes in the health debate.
Dr. Ouellet has always made his comments about Canadian health care within the context of a universal health care delivery system. He has worked hard to find ways to improve that universal system. He has taken ideas from five different European countries to this end.
He considers nothing about the US system to be worth considering for Canada. This is from his farewell...
Robert Bork is one of the founders of the Federalist Society. His views on the law are fringe right. This is well documented, and he is quite proud of his positions and his record. His close analogue on the court is Clarence Thomas.
Apparently by giving a single speech, Senator Kennedy enabled us to protect gay couples from criminal prosecution, uphold a woman's right to control her own body, and allow universities to consider race as one of many factors in admission, among other...
The notion that health care reform may be "unconstitutional" and therefore should not be attempted, is a favorite ploy by the right.
In fact though, a ruling by the court that struck down "individual mandates" in a properly constructed program (that is, one with a government component), would also put Social Security and Medicare at risk. The court is extremely unlikely to do such a thing.
Roberts, Thomas, Scalia and Alito might privately agree that such a program would not...
Hmmm.
Apparently USO tours are now fodder for derogatory comments in some circles. Franken has entertained troops on seven different tours including several to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo over the last 10 years. He also continues to visit wounded soldiers at Bethesda and Walter Reed on a regular basis.
What a loser, eh?
Joshua,
If one is removing non-health related fatalities, it is impossible for the "adjusted/unadjusted ratio" to be less than 1.000 as many of the countries listed show.
Ohsfeldt and Schneider produced this analysis for the extremely conservative American Enterprise Institute and it is badly flawed. Using their methodology for "adjusting" life expectancy, Canada's correct ratio is 1.010. They list it as 0.986.
Using the correct calculation gives Canada an "adjusted"...
Part of the "waning support" is because of the massive amount of money being spent to kill any meaningful reform. The health industry disclosed spending $450 million on lobbying in 2007, $490 million in 2008, and they are on track to spend around $570 million in 2009.
This doesn't count the undisclosed millions that are being spent on dozens of astroturf organizations like "Freedomworks", "Patients First" and "Americans for Prosperity". If any sort of meaningful reform passes, it will...
Mr. Swift,
The actress who played "Louise" is very much in favor of extensive reform. She favors a single payer option. She has given several interviews on the subject and very much regrets her role in derailing reform in the '90's.

Mr. Swift,
In your lengthy excerpts from Charles Lane's WaPo article, I see no mention of clerks; scuttling, little, federal or otherwise.
It does seem to mention one's doctor quite a bit; although I understand you have a deep mistrust of any doctor who might take reimbursement from a government entity. No doubt all of your doctors and dentists take only private money and insurance; that way you can rest assured that they are competent.
Since you seem to think it's...
Although the ultimate fate of Mr. Swift is not important to me, I hope that for the sake of his family he has a living will or a care directive. I am currently visiting an 87 year old neighbor who was critically injured in a car-pedestrian accident back in February.
He is barely conscious, and is permanently on a ventilator. He is too weak to use a slate and is unable to use the "talking valve" on the machine. His lungs slowly fill eith fluid and he must be "drained" a couple times...
Considering that the Health Industry spent $490 million last year and $180 million through May 1 of this year to block any reform efforts, this isn't surprising.
This massively powerful lobby has a huge amount of money looking for someplace to go.
