MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
I was a little surprised by Krista Tippett because I didn't know her show was so popular, but otherwise it isn't that much money. I think Chris Farrell is a Senior Economic something or other. A senior economist at a large firm is going to make more than he does. I'm sure Alton Brown or Bobby Flay makes A LOT more than Lynne Rossetto-Kasper.
Unfortunately Florida has one of the worse public assistance programs in the US. In Minnesota, the mother and child would likely be covered by Medical Assitstance. The income limit for them would be 250% of the Federal Poverty Guideline for a family of 3. All assets are excluded. Instead of moving to France, moving to Minnesota or one of the other forward thinking states may be an option.
I think the word "Wigger" is quite a bit more loaded than "a phrase used far and wide to describe the phenomenon of white fans of hip-hop." In my experience it used much more negatively to descripe a white person who "acts black" or more specifically, acts like a n-word. As you pointed out, it has the racial epithet in it which means that a) the person using the word is racist and b) they have the same racist feeling toward the white person who they see as a race traitor.
Now I...
This is going to be unpopular, but this is crap. How unfair to all the other disabled Minnesotans who have to pay for their rides. While I believe the federal government should treat our returning vets with excellent medical care, I don't think it is the State's place to be putting one type of disabled person over another. What about disabled former policemen? Disabled former firefighters? Disabled former teachers? Are any of those jobs less noble or important than a vet?
Maybe there is a legitimate reason buses run red lights? Has Darcy thought of that?
If a bus starts moving when the light is green, but it quickly turns yellow, a driver would need to break to stop (obviously). Since buses are bigger than cars, they take longer to stop (obviously again) and so more break pressure needs to be applied. This often causes passangers who are standing to fall, hurting themselves. It is better to go through the light.
Another scenario, but similar, is...
The PiPress's watchdog story about the family who can't get health care makes me mad for a number of reasons.
First, there are clearly lies being told by the family.
Second, a large part of the problems are that they aren't reading their notices. They clearly state, in 4th grade level English, why they were denied from programs. Make $1000/month? You aren't eligible for GAMC. Yet they make it seem like it is some mystery why they weren't eligible.
Third, no...
Oh dear, that's terrible. I'll keep you in my prayers.
Ugh.
First, apply for MinnesotaCare. It is run by the State and you do not apply for it at the Counties (for the most part.) You will probably qualify.
Second, what reaction did you want from the county worker? A patronizing, "I'm so sorry"? Have you thought for a second about what position they are in? The worker has to tell people who are MUCH WORSE OFF than you are they are not eligible every day. They have to tell people every day that they will be homeless tomorrow and...
The Red Bull recipes looked disgusting. And 'Cooking for Dads'? Do they mean you should fee Red Bull marinated meat and Red Bull salad dressing to kids? Ugh.
It probably has to do with State Employees only being allowed to use IE. Of course, we've got employees here who still used Windows 2000. They can't be upgraded because their PCs don't have enough memory.
