Posted on 12/16/08 at 01:07 pm in response to Central Corridor supporters fear MPR objections could derail LRT project

MPR often comes off as a jerk. They were a jerk about the radio station in Northfield thing and they look like a jerk here. I support MPR, but I support public transit a hell of a lot more. I think most people do. They are going to end up pissing off their liberal base.

Also, having spent time next to the LRT in Minneapolis, it seems it has a lot less vibration and noise than large trucks and buses do, both of which go down Cedar everyday in front of MPR.

Interesting that Paul Thissen said: "But health and human services is mostly about spending money on people who are older and people who have disabilities, and those are the people who, most Minnesotans would agree, need our help."

I don't think this is correct. I think much more money goes to children and families, who may or may not have disabilities. And if it is true, it is because of the money that goes to nursing home payments, not to actual programs for the elderly or...

The State of Minnesota Dept. of Administration says that State buildings should have temps of 68 to 70 degrees in occupied areas and slightly colder in lobbies, cooridors and restrooms. Being in one right now, it seems pretty dang warm.

Also, one of our buildings needs to be airconditioned all winter long to keep near this standard due to the heat of computers and people.

I just hope in the next few years the mantra of the government in regard to mass transit is "build, baby, build."

Posted on 10/22/08 at 02:21 pm in response to Better a crackhead than a meth head?

I've read Carr's book and have met my fair share of crackheads and methheads and I don't get it. Why the hell does anyone try either of these drugs? They are severely addictive and destructive, everyone knows that. No one is a casual meth user for long. Same with heroin.

But people do. And our safety net sucks. And there isn't even close to enough money in rehab research.

Posted on 09/30/08 at 10:30 am in response to The passion of the Maher brings eternal life to 'Religulous'

I'm as likely to watch this as I was Ben Stein's 'Expelled.' Both seem incredibly offensive to me, and not funny, but for different reasons. The Stein film perpetuates the anti-science beliefs belonging the extreme edge of Christianity as true Christian beliefs, which they are not. This film belittles people for having faith. Most religious people know that their faith is just that faith, or a belief in something that can't be proved, or disproved. But of course, this film will also show...

The Department of Human Services officially uses the word Retarded in some cases to describe people with Development Disabilities. While not politically correct, I assume this is why the Strib writer chose to use that word.

Posted on 08/28/08 at 10:44 am in response to Obama's No. 1 task tonight: Recapture the working class

How many "white working class" voters are there really? I grew up in a white working class home, my Dad installs floor covering, and I was one of the few families of all my friends who had a parent who did manual labor. And we voted Democrat.

My husband drives the bus for MetroTransit. He is the only person of our group of friends who is considered blue collar, aside from a few other drivers.

When I go to places that have "blue collar" workers, they are not white. They are...
