Let’s all stand and worship at the alter of taxpayer funded millionaires and billionaires.

Let us pray: Austerity is for the little people. Ask not what billionaires can do for the people; ask what the people can do to support the billionaires in the lifestyle they have become accustomed. May the politicians promote continued monopolies so that we will always be compelled to serve and honor them. May we always be at their service. Amen.

Posted on 05/01/13 at 07:21 am in response to Brodkorb's Thursday pre-trial hearing comes with a twist

While I agree that the good old GOP boys were out to brand Koch with a scarlet letter for political purposes, I also believe that she knew what she was in for when she chose to be Senate Leader and chose to pursue a romantic relationship with Broadkorp. She also chose to make enemies by uncompromisingly standing alone both with her own caucus and the Democrats. Koch could have fought back by calling a press conference of her own telling the good old boys where to go and put them on notice...

It is wonderful to see a legislator doing what it takes to investigate and understand those who work hard 40 or 50 hours a week and still find themselves short of meeting their most basic needs. It would be nice if more legislators followed Metsa’s lead and demonstrated his interest in public policy and its effect on all of us.

As hard as this is for a single person, there are way too many people working hard work trying to support a family on morally repugnant low wages. The...

This is not the typical gender discrimination case. This was a political coup. You can't look at any type of discriminatory cause of action without looking at the politics of the GOP.

Amy Koch was certainly served up on silver platter because the good old boys in the GOP wanted her out for political reasons. She wasn’t playing well with others. Koch and Broadkorp formed a new GOP dynamic duo and were running a take no prisoners Senate dictatorship. The fact is, if there was any...

The latest ways to grow big business (for-profit or not) is no longer to cater to consumer needs thereby creating more demand, but to show up at the state capital or in D.C. with a tin cup and veiled threats. Fill our cup from the public trough or we will go elsewhere.

Maybe it is time for legislators and congressman to start demanding right back. Call their bluff. What will be the taxpayer return on investment and for how long? How committed are they?

It is time for...

Posted on 03/25/13 at 08:42 am in response to Minnesota’s legislators: Are they underpaid?

The members of the legislature have been operating under the myth that it is a part-time job for far too long. I disagree with Roger Moe. The pay has been a reason for some very good candidates not to run, they'll just never admit it publicly. If the average citizen knew what sacrifice these people make to both run for office and represent their respective districts, they would agree that they are woefully underpaid.

This is not a partisan issue. No matter what side of the isle...

Posted on 03/28/13 at 02:24 pm in response to Controversy over U of M clinical trial has heated up again

I remember when Minnesota medical research institutions used to be a source of pride. Then came the day when pharmacuetical companies began to have way too much power. The Star Tribune Reporter who recently committed suicide is but one story that should haunt everyone. He had recently sought treatment. That treatment consisted of a few short days in-patient, more meds and then the suicide. Pharmacuetical companies have successfully perpetuated the myth that drugs are the new treatment...

Posted on 02/04/13 at 08:18 am in response to Minnesota’s law schools feel the pain as student applications decline

For those graduating law schools in the past 5 to 10 years, it is no secret that times have changed. Law degrees are no longer an instant ticket to an upper income. The prohibitive cost of the degrees along with the declining salaries means a form of financial enslavement for law school graduates. With the amount of student debt plaguing law school graduates, they are prevented from going into areas of law that may benefit society. Those debts also prohibit them from seeking a modest...

Posted on 01/11/13 at 10:51 am in response to Minnesota’s new ‘white flight’: school open-enrollment program

"White flight" is not the cause of the problems with the schools. A more accurate discription may be "self segregating affluence." The problem has less to do with race than it does with class, i.e., take a tour of some of the rural area schools.

The problem with the quality of the schools in many areas has more to do with how we fund schools and the affluent populace manipulation of that funding. As long as the affluent can either live within areas or transport their children...

Congratulations Minnesota voters for having the common sense the Republican state leaders sadly lacked. Congratulations to Democratic House and Senate victors. Great work, I was pleasantly surprised.

The New Democratic House and Senate's first order of business ought to be to make an amendment of its own - making it harder to amend our state constitution to prevent the by-passing of our elected representative form of government with its requisite checks and balances. Second, to...
