Bravo, Jeff -- you've just cut the conservatives' argument off at the knees. A confident, healthy, well-educated populace is much harder to govern and that SCARES THE HELL out of the corporate tycoon class.
A cuts-only MN budget will make most Minnesotans lives sicker, poorer and stupider at the gain of the few who pretend to have our best interest at heart.
News from Greater Minnesota!?! Living and working in Greater Minnesota, I find this example of a local news roundup is extremely welcome. Thanks for capturing good work in many papers I wouldn't ordinarily browse.
More, please!
Missing argument: "More skin in the game" from top earners.
Oh, sorry, I forgot that phrase is only trotted out by the GOP when they propose market-based concepts to squeeze the lower eschelons of Minnesota society.
Wake up, Scott (post #1):
Most of "government operations" is wages and benefits of workers. Across the board, while real wages/incomes have stagnated, [except at the very topmost of the pecking order] everyone's health insurance is skyrocketing. That includes teachers of K-12 education (biggest slice of budget pie is K-12, biggest slice of that is wages/benefits). Being uninsured saves nobody money -- we still all pay the tab collectively through our rising premiums &...
It's about thinking ahead big picture -- The first hybrid Honda Insight we bought new in 2001 [when gas was $1.29/gal] but we knew it was the way of the future. My husband & I logged 200K on it before I crushed it against a pickup & wayward snowdrift. Tough little car! It got 70 MPG in summer, 48 winter.
We mourned but then promptly found a used low-miles 2005 Insight [drove to Iowa in January to get it], and we're been continuing to enjoy excellent mileage [58.9 MPG...
It's called MinnesotaCare for a reason, because it gets health CARE to the people that need it. Ditto Medical Assistance (MA)...
Replacing either with Insurance is a hollow promise, when the financial barriers (deductibles, provider networks, steep copayments) exceed the financial capacity of the poor. What a swindle!
Despite shiny marketing to the contrary, Health Insurance does not equal Health CARE.
Voter ID is nothing but a Red Herring -- a blatant attempt to divert attention away from other issues that need & deserve public attention.
Thanks, Jay, for continuing to to point out the facts, to those who care about facts.
At what point does faith-based budgeting cross the line into malfeasance?
Sharpen your petition-for-recall pencil while Minnesotans await an answer.
Red herring!
The author is forgetting that the budget "shortfall" in Wisconsin was self-created by Mr. Walker's earlier tax breaks to corporate entities. The Leader's slithery tactics are aimed to disrupt any balance of power between real people and corporate interests.
Is the real here Leader the brown-bagging Mr. Walker or the shadowy brothers Koch?
