Re #5 - It's only fair. You guys are always proclaiming how liberals hate America and conspire to take away everyone's freedoms.
Toothpaste? I don't know, probably something harsh with a sour taste.
I'm happy to say that I actually had to google "jason lewis" to find out who he is. That is an accurate indication of how much time I spend listening to the Radical Right's broadcast mouthpieces.
His tactics are employed by all the right wing big mouths of t.v., radio and print. Set up false choices, with straw men serving as the villains who attack "freedom", get your audience worked up to the point of frothing at the mouth, label the straw men as "liberals", or "progressives", or...
Congrats on the new house, Don. It sounds very cool. Had I the means, I would do something similar.
Agree also that the question in #2 is good. Given that most people these days can't afford to build new to those specs, retrofitting needs to be an important focus.
Aside from reducing CO2 output, there is another good reason to do what you're doing, and that is set oneself up for off-the-grid maximum self-sufficiency. Energy, water, food, etc. Not to sound too gloom &...
Re #6 - if only that were literally true.
I'd ask if you got out of the wrong side of the bed today, but the comment is actually typical.
You know, Dennis (#7), if you didn't start off by dissing most of the people on this site, some of your ideas might go over better.
Lefties don't like the U.S. being powerful? Complete nonsense. I for one am most grateful that I can live well and peaceably, and sleep safely at night, courtesy of the military power that protects this nation. My uncle was career Air Force, served in WWII (Army Air Corps), Korea and 'Nam, and retired a Lt. Col. My Dad served in the Navy in WWII....
Re #27 - Having a reasoned debate about an issue as complex and far-reaching as the mission, makeup and deployment of the U.S. armed forces, and the military-industrial complex that supports it, does not constitute "screaming". Did you expect everyone to say "all hail Dennis and his flawless ideas", especially after dissing everyone here as having no credibility?
You put forth a list of ideas, some of which are good, some maybe not so much, particularly as regards the VA. Discussion...
Another in a series of hopeful signs that the tide is beginning to turn against the far right madness. These things go in cycles, after all, and it seems that a lot of folks - including some republicans, apparently - have had enough of the right wing agenda.
Righties suffered a series of defeats at the ballot box yesterday, including places like Mississippi and Arizona. Doesn't bode well for our right wing friends in 2012. When repub elected officials get a sense that the wind is...
Funny how those "anti-capitalist" democrat policies caused the longest period of prosperity in our nation's history, until it fell off a cliff in the 2000's. Gee, who was in charge then? Who was in charge when the financial system melted down, the economy crashed and the housing market imploded in 2008? Oh yeah, same answer to both questions - the repubs.
Historically, the economy has generally performed best under the democrats. That is simple fact.
As for Obama's programs...
With respect to turmeric, the oncologist's suggestion may be less "bizarre" than the uninformed might think. Laboratory studies have shown that curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) kills some cancer cells in vitro, and suppresses the growth of others; primarily cancers of the gut. It also seems to suppress the growth of intestinal polyps.

There is no political will to do anything substantive, and we are in any case past the point of no return. We must focus on coping strategies.
The paleo-record indicates...
