MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
You can add parrots to the list of intelligent birds, and not just the big ones. Having lived with both cockatiels, a feisty little Senegal, and an African Grey, I can tell you their level of awareness, intelligence and ability to communicate (not so much in "parroting" human speech, but nonverbal forms of communication) are quite extraordinary.
I tend to think this extends to many more species, however. For instance, chickadees employ their trademark "dee-dee-dee" in a rather...
I recall hearing a saying that I think is one of the finest compliments that can be paid to anyone, particularly to a leader, that "he was as cool under fire as a mountain lake." That surely describes Gen. Petraeus throughout his career, and in how he handled his fall from grace.
Lt. Col. Weber's comments are very well said. Even the best among us have feet of clay, and that must be the root of our compassion. That Petraeus handled the circumstances of his failure with honor only...
Someone send a copy of this article to Chip Cravaack - he said he wanted data.
I shouldn't be, by now, but I still am continually surprised by and bemused at how those on the right worship money (more precisely, profit) above all else.
Above a robust and healthy natural environment, which after all, only supports us all.
Above providing decent, basic health care to all Americans, so the poorest don't have to go crawl under a bridge to die.
Above doing the right thing with the modest investments of average folk, who are instead viewed as rubes...
People, relax about the seat licenses. The MSFA has to approve the seat licensing scheme, and since the members are appointed by the Gov and by Rybak, who both oppose it, it's not gonna happen. The Vikings can say they have the contractual right all they want, but it they don't get approval, it doesn't happen. They'll just have to find another way, and they have multiple options. Goodness, all this froth about nothing.
As for Dayton or the Dems paying a price for the stadium deal...
With all of Romney's "what he said" answers, I began to wonder why he was there. They could have let Obama speak for 45 minutes straight and called it a night.
Obama also won the body language contest. Romney looked ill at ease and a bit nervous, like someone going in for a root canal.
In fairness though, Romney clearly believes that he can win on the economy, and he knew he could bring nothing to the table on foreign policy, so his strategy last night was to avoid making...
Well, it is, at least, a time honored position, expressed by Caligula (quoting Cicero) as "oderint dum metuant".
Then again, it is hatred that leads to not-being-safe.
Only if the gerrymandering process were fixed to prevent "packing and cracking". One could require that electoral districts be created only by panels equally divided between the two parties (but what about 3rd parties and independents?), or by an appointed nonpartisan group, or give the function to the courts, or settle on a system based on geographic integrity (e.g., a district may consist of one or more counties, but not part of a county). All options have their problems.

Exactly so. DNR, in its own internal communications, clearly believes that it is owned lock, stock and barrel by hunters, trappers and livestock producers, and the rest of the voting public can go hang.
Are they the Department of Natural Resources, or the Department of Fishing, Hunting and Trapping?
Obviously, they are confused, and more than just a bit arrogant, and this needs to be fixed.
Time to start writing some letters.
It's a huge problem, but fixing it is going to be very difficult.
Lawn care is one huge bugaboo. People want nice green lawns free of weeds and pests, so they treat them with toxic chemicals. I live in the Cathedral Hill area, and like to go for walks along Summit, but it's almost impossible to do so without passing through a fog of noxious lawn chemical odors at least once or twice on each walk. It's not just for a week in spring and fall, it's literally every week all summer...
