Posted on 04/04/12 at 10:51 am in response to Memos in NOM suit reveal anti-gay-marriage strategies

If you believe in something, come out and say it. Stand behind it. Put yourself out there and be prepared to argue for what you believe. If you feel you need to hide your identity in situations like this (or how much you give to a campaign or a Super PAC, for that matter), you are a coward.

Posted on 03/21/12 at 05:05 pm in response to Brodkorb vs. lawmakers: Depositions 101

Geez, talk about political suicide. This guy is working in a party that would gladly throw out each and every gender discrimination lawsuit to ever exist and he's claiming gender discrimination ... as a guy? Could he find a way to more annoy his now former fellow republican pals? Yeah, by using the State Human Rights Act, another something the republicans would like tossed in the wood chipper. I imagine he'll be looking for a boatload of money because no one on either side of the aisle will...

Posted on 01/04/12 at 12:52 pm in response to Bachmann: 'I have decided to stand aside'

Well, there she goes. She made for great TV. She was quotable, certainly, and I will miss her for that. And she's certainly better looking, although not nearly as well coiffed, as Mitt Romney.

Other than some possible favoritism (gee, that never happens anywhere else) I just can't give a damn about any of this. Perfectly capable people are continually being drummed out of office for behavior that is absolutely unrelated to ability to perform in that office. (Yeah, I just got that perform in the office bit also.) We hold them to this weird standard we'd never hold our barber, financial adviser or even surgeon to. And let's not pretend that our elected officials are anything all...

Posted on 11/21/11 at 02:58 pm in response to Bachmann book plays up political betrayal

Something I find strange here unrelated to the publishing of the book is that she and her husband switched parties at the same time. How does that work? A person's political beliefs and convictions, one would assume, are personally held. And to go from avid supporters of Jimmy Carter to straight-up far right wing social and constitutional conservatives is not a little evolution. That's whiplash inducing. It's either a small miracle or one or both of them is just going along for the ride.

Posted on 11/14/11 at 03:17 pm in response to Central Corridor LRT slowly coming to life

It's been brutal on the businesses along the corridor, as one would expect. I try to avoid avoiding the area and instead make the point to frequent the retailers and restaurants as often as possible these days. Hopefully the lion's share will make it through the tough times.

Posted on 10/10/11 at 02:11 pm in response to Bachmann says value of book deal 'not ascertainable'

Only in America can a presidential also-ran's (from what I read) horrifically boring book "not sell well" and yet net him a cool $342,000 in royalties (so far), which is about 8 times the yearly income for the average American family.

Posted on 08/29/11 at 02:21 pm in response to Vin Weber: Flawed Iowa strategy doomed Pawlenty campaign

The Republican Party is in a battle for its soul. The Tea Party ("Party" is the operative word) has hijacked the Republican Party from the more moderate Republicans, who are expected to sit down, shut up and drink the Kool-Aid if in fact they disagree on any point whatsoever. Reasoned opinions and even scientific evidence are all met with jeers if they do not align with the Tea Party orthodoxy. Relatively moderate politicians like Pawlenty and Huntsman don't stand a chance in this...

Posted on 08/16/11 at 05:24 pm in response to Bachmann and her unfounded claim that Iran planned to divide up Iraq

Sarah Palin has the same uncanny ability to say something like "That good ol' patriot Paul Revere rode that darn horse all across America to tell the British the French had fries!" And when shown proof that her version was not exactly correct, remains wide-eyed and says, "Well, yes it is." Lovely. Suddenly, she seems like the lesser of two evils.

Posted on 04/12/11 at 01:13 pm in response to Proposed legislation stuns Minnesota's nonprofits

He's just puffing up his chest in a rather pathetic manner. It couldn't possibly pass as written and he knows that. The real issue here is one of character. That he's actually unwilling to speak with people who disagree with him is the worst example of hyper-partisanship I've seen in a long time, and that is at the root of much of what's wrong with the state and the country. When a guy is unwilling to talk only with people who agree with him, he's taken himself out of the real game - the...
