MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
The cheers from the Republican followers of Cain were chilling; an echo of the same reaction when it was suggested to a crowd of R's that those seeking Federal health aid should just be allowed to die.
Since Republicans are so incensed whenever the government "gives" any money to virtually anyone (unless they are very well-to-do, in the form of tax breaks), how about the government acquiesces to the Repub philosophy and refuses to give, loan, whatever, to any governor or leader's state that is against government spending.
Wonder what the voters in those states would do with their votes in the next election.
Bachmann vs. Perry? If either of them gets the nomination, it's final proof that the Republican party has gone over the far-right edge.
I hope the electorate rejects such an extreme, but folks are eager to believe in a savior, no matter how loony their ideas appear to many of us.
How about "if the President answers to the House"?
Does that work for ya? Apparently so, if the House is Republican and the president is a Democrat!
I know that individual stories don't predict the future, but here's one that did. A friend's mom seldom voted, but when Jesse Ventura ran for governor, she giggled, "Wouldn't it be FUN to have Jesse for governor? I'm going to encourage all my friends to vote for him." Apparently she did. I remember, too, being amazed at the turnout of young people that year who might have had that same idea. So much for informed voters.
I meant to add that we were relatively lucky with Ventura as governor (though lots of people may disagree with me) because he chose his advisers well, and the state came through quite unscathed. Not likely with a Perry presidency(gasp!).
In 1955 or '56 (it was a long time ago!) flu ravaged the small college I attended. Out of our group of 42 in a dorm area, 33 lay groaning in their beds while the nine of us who were spared bustled around helping take care of the victims' needs.
Unfortunately, I have succumbed to the flu a few times since then, (I seldom get a flu shot)but I still seem to avoid most epidemics. Lucky genes, I guess!
As a Dem, I'm rooting for Ron Paul to be the third candidate for president in 2012. Go Ron! Take votes away from whomever the R's choose--it won't be Ron!--split the vote, and Obama serves another term. YEAH!
#37, Ray, your comments are consistently excellent--well thought-through, knowledgeable, and clearly expressed. Thank you!
"Free speech"? That's pretty loud "speech"! Don't people have a right to protect their um, EAR drums, just as much if not more, as someone's rights to bang their SNARE drums.
