MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
Hooray for Dwight Eisenhower. I have not heard that quote cefore, but it is accurate. Too bad most of the media does not do the kind of historical digging you do. Thanks. I totaly agree with Ray Schoch and Arvonne Fraser (of course, I often do).
The questions asked at the Towb Hall meeting and quoted in the article were hard, but they deserved good answers. Sounds like the performance of the Congressman was less than steller, but very much like his performance in congress: vague, sometimes incoherant because he is not on point and following whatever the party line is. Never mind that it is more important to do what the party thinks rather than do what the people who are sort of represented think.
Why don't the taxpayers insist that the legislature read and act on the state agencies'reports to the Department of Revenue? It would certainly be a good place to start a relatively accurate "recitation" of the loopholes that allow for tax exemptions, etc. This suggestion would not even require that taxpayers know what they are, but that they exist. This of course would require that the legislators show some courage and actully close some/all of the loopholes and make it clear that the...
Guess what! Even if the government shuts down the Legislators still want to be paid. Regardless of whether the funds to do so come from a "savings account" or directly from tax revenue, tax payers paid for it. A shutdown will be hugely painful and I hope it does not happen. But members of the Legislature do not get to say "Kings X - doesn't apply to me" Somehow. I think we are all in this together. I truly hope that if there are any grownups involved in this, prevail and there will be...
Am sure that some of the comments already made are at least partially true - except that one about MPR being "all drama and no substance". Given that, the alternatives are dreadful. Last week, and at the most heightened part of the Egyptian drama, MPR went to the BBC; network news stations (NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX) all were "business as usual". Knowing that the world in the Middle East was about to be turned upside down, I definately did not need, nor want. another insipid talk show. So,...
Too bad Pawlenty doesn't get it. Calling yourself a moderate doesn't make you one. The center is where most people are: Repblicans, Democrats and Independents. It is irresponsible not to realize that a good idea or approach is neither R nor D nor I; if it needs fixing, and most do, fix it do not. And by fix it I mean be make it better. Pawlenty is almost c ompletely irresponsible; he has no awareness that his policies are a major turn away from the center. Maybe Vin Weber does; my jury...
I am dismayed. Here we have an EPA that may be on the right track, but the discussion is about the impact of the proposed regs on the shipping industry.
How about the impact on me if they are NOT enacted. It seems to me that the reason for the proposed EPA rules is that the EPA thinks there is an impact and their proposal will mitigate it.
Discuss it? Yes! But,discuss it to mitigate the impact on me/the population not to make it okay for the industry to keep doing this...
How come your're so reasonable, when Bachman clearly is not. And how come you "give credance" to her inflammatory remarks by recouting what she said then debunking them rather than the other way around. Surely you are a clever enough journalist to give the "debunking" first, and then what was said to cause that.
Also I agree with Karlson that she is lying, and while I know that laws exit probhiting suggesting that she is lying, but misleading is such a wimpy word. It is not match...
Since when do bullies get their way. The fuss about the President of the United States
delivering a message to school children is just that, a fuss. It is also an insult to those of us who may be dismayed or those of us who are pleased.
I am astonished that it is given the name of controvsy, it should be called what it is: ugly.
I thought we had disposed of this cockeyed idea long ago. I did not count on what might be included "in the dead of night".
I agree with Steve Titterud: Why collect date you are not going to use and really do not need, such as name, age, sex and zipcodes in order to decide about how to provide health care.
If we really are concerned about providing health care, we will determinedly pay attention to what we know. We know that most of the cost of health care is providing for...
