MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
Considering Bemidji had the highest unemployment rate in Minnesota last month beating out Brainerd you'd think the gov would be stopping in Bemidji on a jobs tour? Where are you Mr. Gov? I don't think he's been in town except maybe at a press conference at the airport.
I agree with Mr. Freeman stressing we need GOOD teachers..not necessarily MORE teachers (attention Education Minnesota).
Congrats to Lou Buron and Mary Cambell on their fantastic operation in Bemidji. Lou is one of the nicest and most knowledgable people you will ever meet about broadcasting. As a board member of the chamber up here I can tell you they and their radio station group give back to this community in a very special way.
Its easy to say grab your pancho and suffer when you live in the Twin Cities. Try planning a day driving from Bemidji to watch a game and have it rained out. In order for this team to survive they need to draw from Sioux Falls, Duluth, Fargo, Rochester and so on being a small market team. A few rain days with these people and the Twins might have wished they had invested the money for one. The days of suffering valiantly in the cold like from the 60's at the old Met stadium have come and...
The "Silver Tsunami" of America's workforce to me is not unique to Minnesota or Kanabec County. Its happening all over and our State and Cities need to quit using this as an excuse. I do agree that our education system needs to develop better trained more productive workers. Some of the issues in Kanabec has to do with the counties location and lack of a "micropolitan" center in its boundaries. Living in outstate Minnesota, I think many funding issues (transportation/education/health care)...
I think Twin Cities news stands tall compared with other parts of the country. I wouldn't tinker at all with anything we have going on here because it is consistently better content-wise and in its delivery. Watch Superstation WGN Chicago news once and you'll appreciate the locals.
Build it now or build it later. If Vikings leave I guarantee you in 10 years we'll be approached again about how can Mpls/St.Paul be without an NFL team and we'll build a new stadium for twice the price now. History is our teacher with the North Stars/Met Sports Center and the Wild/Xcel Center. Tear down the dome (as apparently it cannot be rennovated) and give them $300 million and say get it done. And let's get on with life.
As much as I hate to admit it, this too will end up just like pro hockey in the Twin Cities. The North Stars wanted a new arena. We sent them packing to Dallas. 5 years later, people cannot believe we don't have pro hockey in Minnesota. Soon a city (in this case St. Paul) builds an arena for twice the price we could have done it 5 years earlier. The same will happen with football. I agree with the idea of giving them $200 million and remodel the Metrodome. Use the roof...quit kidding...
We have a pool at work on what game Favre will be injured and done for the year. My guess is game 9. We do have several picking this Friday night. Wouldn't that be something. (not to wish ill will on him...but the guy is 40 and all it will take is one miss tackle!)
Living in Bemidji, I do believe the headline should have read that Bemidji is the 4th busiest airport OUTSIDE OF THE METROPOLITAN TWIN CITIES AREA. That would take out Anoka County Airport, Crystal Airport, and Flying Cloud.
