MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
To me, the most significant comments in the Schmickle article is:
"The urgent need for investment comes at a time when government budgets are squeezed the tightest they have been in decades, funding for educational and research institutions has been slashed"
What has been lost in the drive of our current governor with his "no tax" mantra is that what businesses REALLY want and need is not lower taxes but a) skilled workforce b) good transportation availablility c) amenities...
Nice story. The Twin Cities have been hospitable to the jazz scene for over 60 years. I am 76, and clearly remember as a teen visiting the (all black) jazz clubs that lined Olson Highway in North Minneapolis. My friend, Dave Frishberg and I -- two skinny white kids from Highland Park in St. Paul, were always welcomed and treated to great music. Though underage, we nursed cokes for several hours and rocked to some of the finest jazz this side of Chicago. It was a fine memory from my gowing...
There is a strange irony in this move. When Griffith ran (as a Dem) last election, the GOP pilloried him in a variety of ugly ways. Now those calims will come back to haunt him and the GOP when he runs again as the candidate to blasted.
As a long time reader (since the beginning) and frequent contributor to Community Voices (I did the first one published); I have found Minnpost to be fair, balanced, and impartial. After several years of contact, I have no idea where their editorial position is -- vis a vis left/right. And that is the way it should be.
Most interesting part of this article:
And not once did the subject of taxes come up. Instead, Kraus talked about community, culture and strong neighborhoods.
It has long been proven, taxes are low on the list of business decisions. Strong, educated work force...transportation facilities...educational and research entities...proximity to market...cultural and entertainmnet amenities...and many other factors trump taxes.
I ran my own businesses for 45 years, and not once...
I agree, the "dues" are not going to the physician; this is a marketing/financial plan to enhance profits for the medical organization. It is a business decision, not a health care one. But, it is definately different than our common HMOs. Remember, Eisenhower is building a SPECIAL building, to house only those select doctors, who will be available to serve those SELECT patients who pay the dues to enter the club -- excuse me, medical center. This is a distinct two-tiered healthcare system...
A positive suggestion; Minnesota's own SINGLE PAYER HEALTH PLAN.
I refer to the Charter drafted in 1988. Stop "guessing"...READ IT!
I sincerely believe there are people of goodwill among the Palestinians. I sincerely believe most people on earth want to live peaceful, safe, productive lives. But, the people of Gaza elected a government whose agenda demands that Israel become an Islamic state (read the Charter!). That is an obstacle to a peaceful solution, and strengthens the right in Israel, which also inhibits a peaceful solution.
In short...
I have long believed there will have to be compromise on both sides if there is ever to be peace in this conflict; but it will also take PERSONS OF GOODWILL who truly want a peaceful solution, to make that happen. To that end, it is essential to understand Hamas, and then determine if any "goodwill" resides in that group. As I noted to Schwarz, most people to no really understand Hamas, and few if any have read their Chrater. I did! She should. That is essential to knowing what this group is...
Brodkorb is exactly why the GOP is in a funk...and deserves to be. This election is now (or should be) in our rear view mirror. I would have greater respect for that party if they could start looking forward...put up some rational candidates...make proposals that help our state and nation. Instead, they carp about the past, and have candidates that offer nothing but negativism. They deserve to lose elections, as they did the Senate: fairly and with votes counted properly
