The "anybody but Romney" ticket of Gingrich/Santorum may have obtained the nomination but would have been trounced even more severely than Romney in the general election.

While Romney probably benefited from the general cynical assumption that he really wasn't as crazy as the positions of the primary process (Mitt, the Gumby of politics, pretzeling his way to the election), the "dream team" would be carrying a long-term, giant-sized bundle of "crazy" into the general election.
