MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
And here I thought I had broadened my scope a bit, Bill! #s 2 and 5 weren't jazz, and 4 and 8 could easily be classified as "new music" or "what was that?" But jazz is my main interest and focus for most of my music writing, so you're right--this is predominantly a jazz list. Hope you're not too disappointed.
Steve, I wasn't implying a single thing wrong with Triple Espresso. But it's unlikely the Penumbra would run just one show for several years. It was a tiny joke about the "perils" of a smash hit.
Thank you for your focus on compassion, which, like compromise, is now considered a sign of weakness.
Dan, one of my great regrets is that I never saw James Brown live. BTW, Christian McBride has his own outsized personality--maybe the result of so much contact with JB?
Thank you, Mr. J. Always a pleasure to see and hear you play. I'm also enjoying "Kind of Brown." Be sure to let me know when that documentary is available.

Susan Albright is the editor you want to contact about writing for MinnPost. (Click "Contact" under the Search box at the top of the page.) In this article, I didn't mention the Dakota, the AQ, and other clubs because the...
I wasn't a huge Dead fan, I kind of liked Tom Petty, and I had never seen Bob Dylan. So why did I go to the concert? Because I knew someone who knew someone and got a deal on the tickets. I do remember that the music was muddy and the lyrics were indistinguishable. I also confess to being somewhat distracted by knowing that a cute guy I had met fairly recently was also in the house, and having his seat number. Sometime during the evening, I made my way from my reasonably good seats to his...
The Dave Holland Quintet (#2 on my list) has been postponed.
Thanks for the tip, Mordecai. I've long been a fan of the jazz Jeffrey Richman brings to the St. Paul JCC. I've added this event to my live jazz calendar.
CORRECTION: Kenny Barron's bassist will be Linda Oh.
