..when McClatchy bought it in 2006. KR had one other innovative idea that, sadly, launched 15 years too soon. When I worked at The Miami Herald, a KR flagship, in the early 1980's, it introduced Viewtron, the forerunner of today's PC. You got the daily newspaper on a video display terminal in your home via a phone line. Since you had to buy the computer and everything else, it wasn't cost-effective and ultimately flopped.

I swear I can hear Twins executives laughing at that from my house. And you missed the point. There's a difference between being disappointed, like you are, and calling Mauer a worthless stiff who shouldn't be an All-Star. Those are the people I take issue with, as did Nanne. And BTW: He's always been mainly a singles and doubles hitter. Mauer hit 20 homers once, in 2009 (well-timed, eh?), and exceeded 10 homers only one other time (13 in '06). The three batting titles -- unprecedented for...

That was awhile ago, Chris -- 1994. They had some decent players but no money. Both played in a nine-team independent circuit called the North Central League that only lasted a season-and-a-half. The Millers never made it that far, folding after the '94 season. The Loons moved to the Prairie League for the '95, finished second, then folded as well. (That info comes from baseball-reference.com.) I think the Millers were the team that had its bus and uniforms confiscated for nonpayment of...

...to Twins employees, all the way to the executive office. I've talked to quite a few of them about it and they were genuinely scared it would happen. Put yourself in their shoes for a second. Ever work at a business with threats of layoffs? Ever fear for your job? The unknown makes people queasy. That's what they were going through. Now, of course, we know it was a ruse, and it's easy to sit here 11 years later and question why anyone took it seriously. But it's neither unconscionable nor...

I covered that game for the Newark Star-Ledger, all five hours and 45 minutes of it. Dylan's right about the Twins-Yankees record that season, but at the time it was an anomaly. The Twins had been a lot more competitive against the Yankees, winning four out of six in 2001 and splitting 10 games in 2000. The Yankees won every season series from 1993 to '99, when the Twins really stunk, but the Twins managed to steal three or four games every year. From being around the Mientkiewicz/Hunter/...

Don, if you don't have it already, get ahold of the Sinatra at the Sands CD, from a 1966 gig in Vegas with the Count Basie orchestra, conducted and arranged by Quincy Jones. It was Sinatra's first live release, and it's spectacular for its time.

Illiinois hired Bollant shortly after the Phoenix lost to Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
