OK. Attack HHH for political actions, I have done.
I tell you my two personal recollections of him.
The week before the Watergate break-in, my family and I were in D.C. because of Dad's business. We visited the Capitol and saw HHH in the Senate Cloak Room with an aide, Mr. Gray. HHH was giving an interview to a reporter. This was after the California primary, during the procedural fight for CA's delegates, before the convention. It was a very busy time for HHH.
Dad...
Let the Vikings follow the Lakers to Los Angeles -- only 53 years later. Then we will have the Packers as the local team -- the only team owned by its own fans. The Green Fans' Team: 12 NFL titles and 3 Super Bowls. The Purple Billionaire's Team: 1 NFL title and 4 Super Bowl losses.
To all those children out there who go to bed worrying about jobs, rent, mortgages, and food on the table, take it from Sonny in "A Bronx Tale" who advised Calogero ("C"), "Go see what Mickey Mantle...
Mr. Hintz misses the point.
Mr. Hintz assumes that political opinions appear on a linear spectrum with Democrats on one side and Republicans on the other. This is not so. Much overlap between the parties exists, particularly in their dependence on corporate money.
Clear statement of values and policies, with interests and biases stated as clearly, wins elections, when matched with a smart, energetic campaign, wins elections, builds coalitions, and shapes society. Here, the...
I am for ranked choice voting for single winner races. I believe the IP should go for even more dramatic changes:
1. Unicameral legislature. The Legislature shall have 67 seats elected geographically as the Senate is today. The Legislature shall have 136 additional seats, 17 per congressional district, with these elected by party list proportional representation. This way, geography and political values will make up an effective and efficient Legislature that is currently lacking...
Don:
You forgot Al Pacino in "And Justice for All" -- "This court is out of order!"
You should also include The Three Stooges in "Disorder in the Court" -- especially the scene with the bailiff trying to swear in Curly.
And if you are including non-court tribunals, you should include the Senate hearing room scene from "Godfather Part II".
The unallotment case opens the door to bold change that neither the DFL nor the Republicans have, to date, demonstrated the necessary courage or integrity to champion.
One bold move is the creation of a state bank like the Bank of North Dakota (BND). BND has the backing of the full, faith, and credit of the state as an arm of the state, not a private entity behind an official facade like the Federal Reserve. Like the Land Bank of Pennsylvania in colonial days, BND serves as the...
The Court ruled wisely. The debate must have proven so close, in view of the narrow statutory grounds, in contrast to a sweeping constitutional decision so many of us desired.
Justice Page's concurrence speaks to higher constitutional values we must embrace to restore our self-governance and put money in its secondary place.
The three dissenters gained their seats by Governor Pawlenty's appointment. By their dissent, they signal support of a statewide monarchy in the governor...
Judicial elections should remain unchanged.
Adopt the Quie bill, and big business will buy the judiciary for the price of the governor. Adopt the Quie bill, and every judge will be subject to ongoing pressure to maintain the status quo to avoid being named to stand for retention.
The Quie bill responds to a problem that does not exist in Minnesota. Quie bill advocates point to the nasty Wisconsin Supreme Court election as an event to avoid. I agree. One should avoid that...
I appreciate Doug Grow's detailed analysis of the now-opening DFL convention.
I see this "reNew" as an illusion of a new progressive force. First, the entity emerges from the innards of the DFL. No system can change from internal energy only. No evidence exists of outside forces changing the DFL in any fashion. Second, the entity eyes the two purported frontrunners, Rybak, a closet-case crypto-Republican and Kelliher, who, as speaker of the House, has the same title, half the...
An ethical complaint against either Pawlenty or Swanson in the midst of this struggle would make this a radioactive controversy.
