So, what is the purpose of requiring anyone to take an online class? Oh yeah, to make for-profit "schools" money. Considering that for-profit colleges are failing to train students that anyone wants to hire (13% of college students, but 25% of federal money for students, and a default rate of at least double that of non-profits, with higher and longer unemployment after graduation), it would not seem that we have a successful model for effective for-profit school-based education. Clearly...

Posted on 03/26/12 at 12:19 pm in response to Housing squeeze tight for Minnesota's low-income families

This is another reason that the bank bailout should have been the homeowner bailout. Yes, homeowners made the mistake of getting loans they couldn't afford (or that they could afford, as long as they kept their jobs), but banks also made a mistake by providing those loans. The difference is, by virtue of being financial businesses, the banks should have ABSOLUTELY known better. There was no excuse for the banks. In the end, if it was homeowners that would have been bailed out, a...

It's hard to be an obstructionist by standing on the railroad tracks. That's exactly what Sanjem is accusing the Dems of...waving their arms in front of the freight train of the MN GOP, railroading its way on to whatever the hell it pleases.

What could possibly be the use of making such claims? Fear. The MN GOP has failed to do anything that they were supposedly elected to do. Like the kid who cries after smacking their sibling, claiming it was the sibling that hit. An outright...

Excuse me while I recover from incredulity. Breitbart operated on the notion that "there's a sucker born every minute." And when that wasn't enough to make him money and sensational "news," he outright lied.

I thank you for your efforts in the military (I presume that's what you mean by "uniform"), but with all due respect, you've been fooled if you think Breitbart ever told you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. You're not the only one, and I don't fault people...

Posted on 03/23/12 at 04:06 pm in response to Cravaack proposes doubling funds for armed pilot program

If pilots pay for the license, why should there be a governmental cost at all? The license should cover the costs. I don't see where we need ANY federal money for this. Having been through airport security a handful of times since 9/11, I'd say we're doing more than enough (read excessively) to make it reasonably safe to be a pilot. Pilots are behind locked doors now, anyway. It seems to me that being certified to carry a gun on a plane as a pilot is a personal choice. In fact, it...

It doesn't really take much effort. And it's not an insult to your intelligence. It's probably a compliment.

Posted on 03/23/12 at 10:04 am in response to Chef wishes gluten-free trend would die

On both sides.

It's very difficult to do gluten-free stuff that tastes good without filling the meal up with lots of protein and little fiber. Gluten-free grains simply don't behave the same way wheat does, so grain-containing dishes don't have the right mouth feel or flavor. Yes, you can use protein and vegetables, but chefs are often expected to also provide some sort of grain. Non-gluten grains are expensive (wildrice, quinoa, etc.), while the cheap ones (white and brown rice,...

Lord knows. Their decisions have been questionable, at best. And the latest bit has been appallingly unified.

at the outrage expressed by those who support a party that would put a red stamp of government on our uteruses, levy an indirect poll tax, and proclaim "Christian" rule over the entire country.

Posted on 03/23/12 at 01:58 pm in response to Two years on, why we need to protect the Affordable Care Act

Preferably from Target. The only $9 birth control I found on Target's website was a CD by the group named Birth Control for $8.99. I did, however, find dozens upon dozens of conservative blogs making that claim. Oh, and just how many BC options are available? One? Two? Ok. From now on, we're only covering one kind of medicine for each condition that requires a prescription. Heart problems? No problem! You can get this (one generic drug) for $9. What? That won't work? Fine. We...
