MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
Do it! Throw the curve. The prof will probably be delighted to be able to read actual writing. I have little doubt that they have to deal with everything from near illiteracy to txt spk on a daily basis. Make the young 'uns work for it.
When I had to teach a junior-level microbiology lab, I told the students straight up that there's little excuse for typos in the day and age of spell-checkers, and I demanded full sentences instead of bullet point lists. Many of the students...
Can't wear it to work, alas.
It always makes me cringe when liberals use "it's not fair" as their war cry. It's lame. And a waste of time. Because the point isn't about fairness in the sense that everyone is treated exactly the same, but that, under proper circumstances, opportunities are not gated. The extent to which the playing field is leveled depends on the specifics of the circumstances.
Sure, it's unfair that people who can afford to pay more taxes would be getting a break from this rebate. However,...
Maybe my brain's a bit fuzzy this morning, but I found this article to read like a manic episode. I guess I got the vague impression that there was stuff going on that was maybe unethical, including a journalist, but I'm afraid that I'm not very certain about what I read.
I'm glad that Bakk is talking to the leaders, but it's also clear that there's a lot of Henny Pennyism amongst conservatives and conservative businesspeople (at least people who think they're business savvy). The sky will not fall. This will not be a disaster. In the end, if the budget is carefully planned, it will be far more predictable, and overall cost less due that predictability. But make no mistake about it, balancing the budget will not be free. Get used to it.
If it was, healthy adult women wouldn't have to have a yearly exam in order to have access to birth control (despite the fact that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said that BC pills should be over the counter http://health....
I, too, have a hard time believing that such a tax would or could be imposed on snow birds. However, expanding the sales tax base will help in making snow birds pay for their use of Minnesota resources. Pick your battles. Stand firm on a broader sales tax base, including high end clothing and services, and drop the snow bird tax.
That is a bit too close to the target, Hal. What's sad is that most of the time, the quality of the programming is comparable. I no longer subscribe to cable or satellite TV.
Mr. Brandon is right. While I won't be singing praises for the action, making a mountain out of it is a bit silly. Besides, this "news" is more than 2 years old. This wasn't missed when Lew was vetted (and approved) by Congress for the position of Budget Director of the OMB. Nor did it stop him from being appointed as Obama's Chief of Staff over a year ago (though the issue was necromanced at that time, too). And, having done a reasonably good job in both capacities, this becomes an...
If you want to know whether pay day loans are predatory, take a look in states that allow video gaming. Drive through any major town in those states and identify the video casinos. Then look to find where the pay day loan services are. Often, you'll find them adjacent one another with clusters of both in lower income areas. Coincidence? I think not. Take a look at the area that surrounds such establishments--they're always the worst-looking area in the general vicinity. If either of...
