Signs? What's next? Street Lighting? Water Service? Zoning standards? Parking fees?

What is the goal? Nobody should die? They see one sign in northern Minnesota and 340,000 other signs have to be replaced?

Posted on 01/13/11 at 06:22 pm in response to Why Illinois lawmakers passed 66 percent income-tax hike

Is there some kind of insanity rampant here?

Why is an increase in Illinois income taxes from 3% to 5%, a 2% increase after many years, described as a 67% increase (which mathematically, it is, but that means nothing, based as it is on a tiny base figure).

The Minnesota individual income tax rate is between 5.35% to 7.85%; much higher than Illinois.

Well, that's one way to get New York and San Francisco envious of what we have here. Right now, they laugh at our pretensions. They won't dare laugh at this.

Posted on 12/11/10 at 10:33 am in response to Melendez won't run for another term as DFL chair

It's not surprising that Melendez didn't mention the "Ignore the Poor" political postcard campaign that he authorized to attempt to save the Senate District 40 seat for the DFL.

This crude, multi-faceted campaign with three postcards mailings that in addition was aimed at Roman Catholics and their position against homosexual marriage while erroneously tagging them with being against the poor.

The messages of the postcards reminded voters of Archbishop John Nienstedt's mailing...

It always amazes me that some people think that they can get to have their own beliefs when they enroll at Catholic schools or join Catholic parishes. The Catholic Church is not a debating club.

I think they stay there because if they posted those comments from a position from outside the Catholic Church, not one person in a thousand would be the slightest bit interested.

People like to read about conflict and some people like the attention they get when they start arguments...

Posted on 11/09/10 at 12:11 pm in response to In dialysis, life-saving care at great risk and cost

We need more journalism like this. Thank you.

An issue that wasn't raised, however, is the use of dialysis at the end of life.

I know of a patient, age 75 or so, who also had a stroke and I'm not sure what other problems. The patient is not able to talk and is confined to bed or a wheelchair. I've been told that dialysis is keeping the patient alive and and that may be for a very long time.

The patient's spouse refuses to authorize the cessation of dialysis.

Posted on 11/05/10 at 08:43 am in response to Minneapolis murders on the rise: Tracking the data

Wouldn't it make more sense to track murders by race? They seem to be concentrated on the North and the South sides, making that percentage up towards 90%.

Sadly, it is probably mostly "black on black."

Posted on 10/28/10 at 03:34 pm in response to Crazy time erupts over 'Catholic' collar

Yup, the "collar" image could have been a Protestant. But the button the model was wearing states "Ignore the Poor." Hmmmm. Most of the objectors to the DVD Marriage mailing said that that money should have been used to help the poor. Hmmmm.

Seems to us that this is aimed directly at Archbishop Nienstedt for the mailing of those DVDs.

Oh, and there were three mailings in that district, not one.

The second one showed an angel with a banner, but that could have been...

Posted on 10/28/10 at 03:56 pm in response to Catholic controversy in election politics

What's really incredible is that how little reporting the press, including MinnPost, who I normally consider to be a valuable source, has done on this issue.

There were three mailings, the priest photo, the angel photo and the Catholic altar photo with St. Anthony of Padua holding the Baby Jesus and 3 crutches indicating miraculous cures along side.

How come nobody mentions that last one when they say that Catholic images weren't intended?

Posted on 10/28/10 at 03:51 pm in response to Clerical collar on legislative mailing raises holy heck

The button that says "Ignore the Poor" on the coat of the clergyman is a direct reference to the criticism that Archbishop Nienstedt received when the Marriage DVDs were mailed to Catholic Minnesotans.

Most of the objectors said in their comments that the [donated] money should have been spent on the poor.

The DFL leadership is violently opposed to the Catholic Church's positions on homosexual marriage and abortion. They want to control the legislature and the governor's...
