"…We don't view this bill as an attack on teachers…"
Right.
School administrators sing "Kumbaya" with teachers at every faculty meeting here, I presume.
The domestic often intrudes on the philosophical…
I’m not a biologist, and make no claims to scientific expertise, but much of the environmental debate has little or nothing to do with science anyway. Claiming that the country is “…on a trajectory toward socialism,” whether true or not, isn’t an environmental argument, it’s political – or to be more accurate, it’s ideological. Much the same could – and should – be said about other points raised in Don’s “Game-changers” paragraph. Economic crisis, high unemployment, the growth of a political...
Good piece, Eric.
“These findings certainly accord with our ideological stereotypes: Conservatives are often wrong but never in doubt; liberals are so open-minded they won't take their own side in an argument.”
I especially like the last half of the quoted line. Tolerance seems more and more frequently to be part of the liberal stereotype, so much so that liberals will occasionally find themselves defending, if not the action or speech, the right of someone with whom they...
I have 3 sisters residing in Wisconsin. I doubt any of them will be voting Republican for the foreseeable future.
Nor will I, if what Minnesota’s Republicans presented as budget “targets” represent their best thinking. Cutting revenue via reductions in taxes on business while the state is in the midst of a budget shortfall of several billion dollars creates approximately zero jobs, and shifts even more of the burden of maintaining services to the property tax and individual income...
If the courts have ended up drawing the lines for nearly half a century, 'twould seem like ample proof that legislators canNOT “…complete their constitutional obligation of making fair maps,” despite claims to the contrary from GOP and DFL leaders.
I've seen no evidence so far in the legislative session that the oft-referenced but seldom-attempted "balance" is part of the GOP agenda. Were the DFL in charge, as they apparently were for many years, the same self-protective maneuvering...
Thanks for setting Mr. Tester straight, Ron.
“…a combination of extortion and treason” sounds about right as a characterization of Buckley’s remarks, at least ethically. “Treason” doesn’t work legally, however, since he’s not an American citizen.
At the very least – keep this in mind as you watch Republican legislators “assume the position” for business tax cuts – Buckley’s rather frank views provide ample evidence that there’s absolutely no reason for the Minnesota legislature...
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!
Yes, indeedy, us po' workin' stiffs'd be in real trouble if'n it weren't for the fact we ain't takin' no extra money from the folks in that big house up there on the hill… It don't matter if WE can breathe the air, 'long as THEY gets to.
This is a fine piece, Eric. Thanks for doing the research and some thinking about it.
I’m skeptical, hopeful, apprehensive… I don’t know enough about Egypt to comment with any real intelligence about whether there’s a better path to democracy, or whether an Egyptian democracy will look anything like ours – or like Turkey’s, for that matter. I tend toward congenital suspicion of the military, since they generally have no experience whatsoever with democracy, so it’s encouraging that,...
I admit to not knowing much of anything about Wisconsin’s tax or collective bargaining history, so I hope someone else reading David’s piece can comment knowledgeably about a specific part of Joseph Skar’s comment #2.
I would not be surprised if at least some of Wisconsin’s tax rates were higher at some point over the past 60 years than they are at present, though Mr. Skar doesn’t specifiy which tax rates he’s talking about… Income taxes? Property taxes? Sales taxes? All taxes...
