Aggregates are sand, gravel and crushed stone used in asphalt and concrete production. Most aggregate mines in Minnesota don't have the industrial sand used for hydraulic fracturing, and most members of the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association have little to do with it.

Posted on 11/27/12 at 01:06 pm in response to Sister Kenny Institute revolutionized treatment of polio patients

My mom had polio in 1953 and she relied on Sister Kenny's rehabilitation techniques to recover. Some 50 years later, my mom was back at Sister Kenny recovering from a stroke but also, a return of polio-like symptoms - muscle weakness, breathing and swallowing difficulties, and more. It is not unusual for polio sufferers to re-experience problems decades after symptoms became dormant; the care required of these older, ravaged bodies is distinct. Exercise, for instance, must be done with...

The red flag here is that an international organization with revenues of $13.9 million (2008 990) has only two board members because really, Mortenson is paid staff. In the Central Asia Institute's latest audit on Guidestar, there is a third person listed as secretary that is not now listed on the website.

Why, after so many years and a book haven't more board members been engaged? Because they ask questions, require answers and insist on structure. I'd love to hear what the Bozeman...

Regarding posting public notices online, have you seen city and county Web sites? Most are very poor. There are few trained government people who know how to organize Web site information and update it. For many smaller communities, the local newspaper is THE community site because professionals work there who regularly design, organize and update their Web sites.

As to public notices in the print editions - readership for weekly newspapers is still very, very high, particularly in...

Okay, so you understand that the Red Wing newspaper is NOT part of Red Wing Publishing, which owns the International Falls Journal. It used to be, but was sold to Forum Communications several years ago. Forum also bought the papers in Hastings, Woodbury, the new defunct Stillwater weekly, River Falls, and more, collectively known as Rivertown Newspaper Group.

The 26% open rate is good. I disagree that 18% is respectable considering that readers asked for the e-newsletters. If I were a managing editor, I'd consider the extra, putzy work required to produce them and whether they're worth it or not. They've lost their cool factor, perhaps.

How snide can a company be? Lookout Services isn't looking out for anyone but itself.

I've always appreciated the editing function of news sites and wish they'd apply it to their comments section. Select those that move a conversation forward, add interest or another perspective. It'd be the same process as selecting Letters to the Editor. If the media can't take the time to do that, then eliminate the opportunity for comments. No big deal.

The only people who are upset about pulled bylines are those in the PP newsroom or inside the newspaper industry. Readers don't really care about bylines. For us, this is like watching a well-loved couple fight as we walk by their window.

Here's another thing that tipped subscribers over the edge to becoming nonsubscribers: recycling. It sounds crazy, but when people had to start stacking and storing papers until garbage day, they asked themselves about the value of all those pages. They found themselves stepping over and around newspaper piles; most homes do not have special recycling areas, drawers, closets, etc.
