MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.

1) It appears Wells Fargo is encouraging people to take advantage of existing down payment assistance programs. Its not clear that all, or any, of those programs provide the entire down payment.
2) Given that a majority of American households are under water on their mortgage, i.e. have negative equity, it would be surprising if that was not true of people going into foreclosure.
3) Wells Fargo makes money by making loans. Right now the people who can afford to buy a home are...
"A senior Republican Senate staff aide"
How many" senior Republican Senate staff aide's" are there? Why should we believe this one? Because he is stating the obvious conventional wisdom?
If this is a great example of how anonymous sources serve us as readers, nothing will be lost by banning them altogether. For all we know there is a battle-royal going on behind the scenes over how hard to fight the nomination and this "senior Republican Senate staff aide" is just using the...
The road industry's gravy train is coming to an end as their investments promoting automobile use no longer translate into increased gas consumption. So they are now looking for a new business model that will guarantee growing revenue for their industry in the 21st century. That has little to do with meeting transportation needs and everything to do with maintaining and increasing dependence on the automobile.
We aren't maintaining our existing roads, instead we are spending money on...
If you aren't going to act on the results of screening there is no point in spending money to be screened.
The claim has always been that early detection leads to early treatment and early treatment improves chances of survival. The numbers don't seem to support that. It appears that screening has doubled the number of people diagnosed with prostate cancer while only marginally increasing the number whose death is attributed to prostate cancer.
Because of side effects, early...
"of course, many are assuming that the election was rigged/stolen in the first place. but i've yet to see proof that this is the case"
Once you have a conspiracy theory, everything can be made to fit it. The current media frenzy on Iran is just the latest example of how media narratives work the same way. The only evidence the election was rigged/stolen is that many people didn't expect the outcome.
"I'm also reasonably confident that many Iranians do believe that the current...
"Gore is correct that he fought it in the supreme court and e didn't have more legal options, but let's not forget it was Bush, not Gore, who took the recount to the court."
As Iranians are showing, that was not necessarily the end of it.
The reality is that in the 2000 election thousands of absentee votes from military bases were counted in clear violation of Florida law since they lacked postmarks and were received after election day. Gore could have demanded the law be...
"Municipalities say they don't have the dough or staff, but engineers claim the return on investment is under a year."
MnDOT wastes billions of dollars moving congestion from one place to the another like a cat chasing its tail. That keeps engineers employed. But that gas tax money could be better spent on cost effective investments in Intelligent Transportation Systems, like timing traffic lights, and properly maintaining highways so they don't have to be replaced every 10-20 years...
Its obvious that most "informed" western observers were convinced this was going to be a close election. They based that on the information they had available and their analysis of Iranian society. If the vote is not a fraud, then they were wrong. And they are no more likely to be correct in their evaluation of whether there was fraud, based on the results contradicting the same information and analysis that lead them to believe the election was going to be close.
If you believed the...
If you want peace, the solution to the conflict is obvious. Readmit to Israel the Palestinian refugees who fled their homes during the war and their descendents. Give everyone in the country full, equal political rights, just as Israeli Arabs have now. Provide some legal process for Palestinians to regain their homes or be compensated for their loss. Except for extremists on both sides, this would end the violence.
Of course, sometimes there are things more important to people than...
I think there is one simple answer. There is no way to be a successful national politician without strong support from members of the financial industry. The two are completely intertwined.
It would never occur to Obama to look outside the Ivy League educated cadre that he has been part of his rise to national prominence. As it was for the Clintons, Bushes, Gore, Kerry ... The last successful presidential ticket that did not include at least one Ivy League educated member was Carter-...
