Some days your brain thinks "green" and your fingers type "blue." I'll fix it.

When I was a Washington correspondent for the Strib, we routinely set rules for access to the congressional galleries through standing committees of correspondents. Important distinctions: the committees had real authority over the access even while they were subject to House and Senate rules, and their members were elected by correspondents, not hand picked by partisans. The committees set rules barring "journalists" who were engaged in lobbying, doing paid promotional work for political...

Good catch, John. Initially, I had focused on our 5-state Upper Midwestern region. When I decided to shift the focus to the broader Midwest, I should have noted that Michigan lost population during the decade. Story will be changed.
Thanks for your interest in the story.

Rob,
I haven't seen data sets linking educational attainment with discouraged workers and underemployed workers. Are you suggesting that those groups would close the education-unemployment gap? If you or any other readers know of such data, let's get it into this comment thread.
Meanwhile, thanks for your interest in the article.

It's true that fewer and fewer Americans actually pay income taxes thanks to legal deductions and assorted credits we can get for everything from having children to installing energy-efficient windows.

About one in three filers for the 2008 tax year were non payers. They filed to reclaim every dollar that was withheld from their paychecks for the year.

My April 15th story on that subject is here...

Dennis, several sources have told me in interviews that satellite service as it exists right now doesn't quite do the job for functions like interacting with the DNR for fishing licenses, etc. and doesn't come close to options like fiber in terms of speed and reliability.
Comment from readers with first-hand experience would be helpful here.

Savetheinternet.com says the Uptake's live stream will be available here http://www.savetheinternet.com/mnhearing .

It also says you can use the #internetMN hashtag to tweet about the event.

Paul,
I'm not aware of anyone challenging the point that more of one group were killed than the other. The point the opposition is making, as I understand it, is that at least some possibly criminal acts were committed by the group now in power and they should be investigated.

Christopher,
I agree that the events in DRC are another part of the issues raised in the article. As I said near the top of the story, there is too much relevant context here to cover it all in a...

Thanks, Dan. It would be great if a biologist or ecologist responded to your question.

My understanding of adaptation is some development, including behavior, that enhances the chances of having descendents and therefore contributes to the survival of the species. In this case, it could mean caring for the dead infants for a while just to be sure they didn't somehow recover and live to pass the parents' genes to their own offspring. But the enticing question is whether that's what...

Ron and Mohammed,
The article doesn't say taxes are the only Tea Party issue. It says these groups are influential this year on this particular issue. And it says that one of the Tea Party groups in Minnesota is staging a rally at the Capitol today, the day of the tax filing deadline.

This is not a definitive article on Tea Party sympathizers, but one that mentions them in connection with the topic of the day.

Hope that clears up that issue. And thanks for your interest...
