Audra,
Back in September I heard Mary Lethert Wingerd speak about her new history of early Minnesota - North Country: The Making of Minnesota (U of M Press). She talked a lot about the intermarraiage of the French and native peoples of Minnesota, particularly the Ojibwe as their territory extended north into Canada and east along the Great Lakes. She is the one who got me interested in this part of Minnesota's history that way too few Minnesotans know anything about. So when the...
Thank you to all of you for the time, research and thoughtfulness that you put into this very thorough article. We as citizens need to be contacting our legislators about these issues concerning very basic rights found in our constitution.
The abuse of the public defender system by Denny Hecker is inexcusable given the time and money that surely went into his case by more than one public defender.
Those who do this very important work should not have to be giving up living...
I agree with Tim. Where were Democrats before the election?? Yes, the slaughter might have been larger, but at least they would have tried and let the electorate know what they stood for. Why should the unemployed vote for Democrats if they're not even going to try to extend unemployment without taking on millions of extra dollars in tax cuts for millionaires.
And where is their spokesperson??? Yes, I agree that Obama had needed to (and still needs to) speak out more and be more...
Thank you Kim for doing what I didn't have time to do - talk about the fracturing. I think the idea of walking subcaucuses is one of the worst anybody ever came up with. And the games that are played by those "in-the-know" have really discouraged lots of the newcomers from 2008 from becomming active and involved DFLers.
I'm with Alida. I didn't donate one dime to the DFL and don't intend to until Melendez is gone and the party comes to its senses. This business of locking Dayton out of the convention is practically the same thing as the Republicans banning some of their finest. We can disagree, but we don't need to be disagreeable.
And the attitude that the best candidate is the next one in line who's earned it through winning previous elections and being "loyal" to the party is what lost us the...
Tony,
I would be pretty hesitent to come out and call myself a Republican, if I were one, with you at the head of the Party. I'm sure that many of those on your list as well as others within the Party feel the same way. Your disdain for Freedom of Speech certainly shines through in the actions taken this weekend.
Wouldn't it be nice if the running that Tony ended up doing was from pitchforks of the moderate GOPers who now realize their party has become the party that is expected to march in lock-step with Herr Tony.
It's too bad that GOPers on the far right can't disagree with their more moderate bretheran without becomming so disagreeable. But as they lock out the moderates, they also lock out money and anyone who might have thought of joining the party in the future. So sad.
I just love the coverage of the Republicans in Congress since they are in "ascendency". We hear from ole blabbermoth Mitch McConnell that yes, they'll probably add on more weeks of unemployment so that doesn't expire, much against their will, because they aren't being "paid for" by reductions elsewhere. But not ONE WORD about the tax cuts not being paid for either. And since the Republicans are in "ascendency" we no longer hear from any Democrats who could point that out.
What...
Beryl,
As much as I am unhappy at having to go through another recount and having to listen to the bombastic Tony, it is wise to remember that the recount was triggered by the percentage difference between Dayton and Emmer and NOT by a request from Emmer himself. Yes, it would have been very gracious of him to concede once the vote was certified, but I doubt that Tony would have allowed it.
A bill to lower the percentage triggering a recount from one-half percent to one-...
Eric,
By any chance did you watch 60 Minutes last night? There was a very interesting interview with former Justice Stevens, part of it covering this issue. He discussed why he was so upset with the Supreme Court even becomming involved in the issue. Quite enlightening in terms of Supreme Court history and and its current activism.
