"That's why the OWS protest is misplaced and why they have no credibility with anyone other than the young and the clueless." Many intelligent, educated people in all age groups are represented in the OWS, including former members of the military. One Iraqi veteran involved in the protests stated, "Second time I've fought for my country. First time I've known the enemy."

When one hurls labels such as young and cluesless, Marxists, godless liberals, etc., in various postings, it...

Posted on 11/04/11 at 10:40 pm in response to Minnesota students get high marks, but there's trouble ahead

Before comparing U.S. students to those in Finland, Canada, Japan, Korea, or other nations whose students perform better than ours, realize that many of these countries have socialist democracies, political and economic systems that several contributors in this post regularly criticize.

In international studies Finland regularly rates at or near the top in honesty in government and business, concern for the environment, quality medical care, as well as education. Perhaps we can...

Once you're a subscriber to the Star Tribune, the annual subscription is more expensive than buying the Pioneer Press daily at a convenience store. In my opinion, neither paper has a clear advantage over the other.

"If Herman Cain falters, we will shift to Newt." Evidently Mr. Tester feels he speaks for all conservatives.

Posted on 10/11/11 at 03:52 am in response to Black students' suspension rate at MPS is far higher than others'

Some very good points in the earlier submissions.

Unfortunately, some children, especially in lower socio-economic areas, come to kindergarten never having had a book read to them at home. Studies have shown that these students have a higher probability of seldom enjoying academic success in their school years and having behavioral problems.

It's very difficult to improve parenting skills, since many of these parents or guardians are reluctant to accept any help or...

"There is not the resentment of success in America than there is in Europe..."
A study by the Brookings Institution showed that there is more upward economic mobility in the Nordic nations than in the USA. Perhaps the Republicans can bring back Horatio Alger stories to give us hope.

Posted on 09/21/11 at 05:50 am in response to Obama's rebuttal to the 'class warfare' meme

After the assault on the middle class that began in the Reagan administration, we heard nothing about class warfare. Can you imagine the cries of the reactionaries if taxes on them were to be at the same level as half a century ago.
As for socialism, international studies rate the socialistic democracies ahead of us in health care, honesty of business and government, education, care of the environment, etc. Of course, we hear nothing of these studies in the "liberal" media.

Posted on 08/27/11 at 10:43 am in response to What if Obama gave FDR's 'I welcome their hatred' speech?

#2 Kim - Agree with you.
Obama is the antithesis of FDR and failed to blame Wall Street and large corporations for the depression (not recession) when he would have had public opinion behind him. To now give a speech in the FDR tradition would be phony.
In our history the second terms of presidents have not been as successful as the first, which doesn't give us much reason for hope.

Posted on 08/03/11 at 10:02 am in response to Debt-limit plan becomes law

In next year's presidential elections our choices will be a third party candidate or one of two Republicans. As of now it doesn't appear that anybody will challenge Obama in primaries.

Posted on 07/31/11 at 05:44 am in response to Senate passes Klobuchar resolution condemning Norway violence

Senator Klobuchar often takes positions on issues that aren't controversial and impact ony a small segment of our population, such as adoptions from Haiti and hunting wolves in northern Minnesota. One never sees her in the front lines on important issues that may cost some political capital. Obviously, Minnesotans must like a person who does little of importance, since her poll numbers are so favorable.
