I'm not sure why the name "Gewoni" has been perpetuated as the name of the sculptor of the Longfellow statue (even the Smithsonian website uses it), but his name was actually Andrew GEWONT. He was born in Zakopane, Galicia (Ukraine)and had a studio on Hennepin Avenue near the library.
There was a feature article on him in The Minneapolis Journal on July 5, 1902, Pg. 18 and he's mentioned in an article about literature and sclupture in the Winter 1997-98 Minnesota History (by the MHS)...
