MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
As a member and annual donor to LSP, I made an extra donation to them today to counter the disgraceful way the increasingly dysfunctional Catholic hierarchy has responded. LSP's work with immigrants is justice and hope embodied.
there are few cases which are so clear about our double standards of "justice" when the FBI raids nonviolent activists but remains silent in the face of this clear violation of the Convention on Torture.
Bravo, Chuck!
Marv continues to inspire us with both his life of nonviolent resistance and his humor.
Although ATK officials would never publicly admit it, they were always aware of our weekly presence at their corporate headquarters for the past 16 years. Now, we'll have to ask our peacemaking friends in the DC area to continue the tradition.
Readers would do well to read reports from Sami Rasouli (formerly of Minneapolis)from the Muslim Peacemaker Team who is living in Najaf (http://reconciliationproject.org/) and also the regular reports from the Kurdish northern part of Iraq from Duluth Catholic Worker Michele Naar-Obed of the Christian Peacemaker Teams. I agree with Ellison as long as they are true "civilians" and not mercenary "contractors" which are part of the problem. Even PRT (Provincial Reconstruction Teams) efforts, when under the control of military forces like the Red Bulls from MN in southern Iraq, smack of imperialism when conducted under conditions of military occupation.
What is really needed is reconstruction by groups like the Mennonite Central Committee, American Friends Service Committee, and other non-profits who...
Rep. Ellison is on good legal grounds (as well as high moral grounds): The US Constitution, which he swore to uphold when he became a Member of Congress states that any Treaty signed by the Federal Government becomes the supreme law of the land. (Art. 6 - aka the Supremacy Clause). There are numerous treaties we have signed protecting civilians from warring parties and the civilians of Darfur certainly need and deserve our support.
Kudos for someone who not only represents me but...
Thanks for this important article - especially noting the local connection to Alliant Techsystems, our local war profiteer. Readers should be aware that there is a weekly vigil in front of this company's headquarters in Eden Praire that has been on-going for more than 12 years. Check out www.alliantaction.org for more info.
KSTP was never really a good fit for someone as creative as Mischke. Maybe Don Shelby can go to bat for him and encourage his bosses at WCCO radio to keep his show local.
My two favorite memories of his show: his honesty about his depression and his willingness to go host an impromptu fundraiser for a female sheriff's deputy in southwest GA who had no health insurance.
I'm not sure it's really a complement but our family named our dog Mischke in honor of our son's favorite...
Mordecai's comments are right on target. What we experienced two weeks ago was the demonizing of dissent. Nothing less than our democracy is at stake when the mainstream media rolls over as lap dogs to those in political, military, and economic power.
First we had reporters "embedded" in the military in Iraq. Now we find them "embedded" in our militarized police. Thank God for these independent, free speech voices!
MinnPost's Daily Glean noted that the Strib missed the local connection to the story. These bullets are made by Alliant Techsystems of Eden Prairie, the military's largest supplier of ammo.
However, even they missed the irony of the story: Buried in the on-line version (but near the end of the print version) is the following- "Studies are being conducted to see if it can be made more lethal without violating the Hague Convention, they said."
Ironic since ATK is also the largest...
