MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
But we have become so accustomed to calling the shots in our drunken arrogance of power, we start asking questions like this.
At some not-so-far-future time, the shoe is going to be on the other foot. Is it really in our interest to set precedents such as we are now setting with respect to our relation to nations - i.e., imperious, violent, openly threatening their sovereignty ??
Last year, according to CMS, Medicare shelled out about $500 billion in payments, and most estimates of what proportion of this is due to overpayments or outright fraud come in around 10%, or roughly $50 billion - ANNUALY.
So the proposed 10 year program to cut benefits by $400 billion, or about $40 billion per year, is SMALLER than the current erroneous payments.
Why not attack Medicare fraud and overpayments FIRST ?? Then let's see where we're at.
A good next step...
I have sleep apnea of a type requiring a specialized machine, costing more than the usual biPAP machine.
According to the most current DME fee schedule used by Medicare (publicly available at http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Medicare-Fee-for-Service-Payment/DMEPOSFeeSc...
...it's always easier to handcuff 'em.
The quote from the Olmsted county attorney is fascinating: after "...kicking Eric Hightower as Hightower lay on the ground. Zilge was then able to handcuff Hightower". The county attorney seems to imply the officer was UNABLE to handcuff Hightower until he'd been kicked sufficiently.
I guess the county attorney wants us to shrug it off and believe that a good old fashioned cop-kicking is a regular part of good policing ?? That this is...
> the end, at least temporarily, of control by the ludicrous outfit called the MN GOP.
> probably no government shutdown.
> we are highly unlikely to see ALEC programs passed as solutions for MN.
> no constitutional amendment chicanery.
The DFL is no bargain, but in light of the performance of the GOP in controlling what could be the WORST legislature in MN history, I'm thinking this is a step in the right direction.
...and anything else this outfit can dream up. "In for a penny, in for a pound !"
Why pretend, as the mayor in his duplicity of course MUST pretend, that we had ANY spine WHATSOEVER in the negotiations over this massive handout ?
"...the team is exploring all possible avenues to cover its share of a new stadium."
Like thorough highwaymen, they've got to go through ALL the pockets of the fans and taxpayers and see what there is to get. And why not ?
...these are the two roots of the problem.
...and if the GOP could only mouth the right message, all their problems would go away.
Then too, I guess it would help if that liberal media bias could be exposed, and if all that evil liberal money's undue influence on politics could be explained better. It would probably take a good sized bankroll from the Koch brothers and a series on Fox News to really set the record straight.
I say to Mr. Hann, Zellers, and the whole GOP leadership gang: You're right, oh so right !!...
"...drivers licenses they already have. How could that be expensive?"
Your claim that these groups already have licenses is false. See below:
"More than 30% of American 19-year-olds in 2010 (30.5% to be precise) did not have a driver's license, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute."
(that's from Detroit Free Press in July -...
It appears we couldn't have done it without you.
We'll need you again in future, so stay tuned.
