"...Wilf spent several million dollars in lobbying and campaign contributions. So perhaps it was inevitable..."
Sad, but true, due to the political climate we have now, where the public interest is treated like a poor cousin in the Legislature. The public interest doesn't get people re-elected, and it doesn't get you a nice fat job after you retire from office (keep watching for this, folks).
Isn't it amazing what a few well-placed millions can get you when you ask venal...
I'm just spitballing here, but could they perhaps have shopped around a little ??
I don't want to sound cheap, cuz I'm sure $330 an hour is an absolutely wonderful bargain !! It makes me want to rush out and buy some of those billable hours before the rate goes up !! Even if I don't need 'em.
But one wonders if this attorney has any other clients who willingly agree to $330 an hour for an unknown number of hours, leading to no action other than offering an opinion ?? Where...
I wonder just what those "opportunities" might be? Some form of reward, perhaps?
I've wondered just what threats and promises were made to all these legislators who worked and voted against the public interest in the stadium matter. It was all shielded from the public eye, of course.
Over time, maybe we'll see some light cast on this in the careers of these legislators - i.e., what goes in to "getting this done".
..and he'll without a doubt flip-flop again, depending on what he thinks makes him look good at any one point in time. His statement quoted here is a big ole load of b*llsh*t which he doesn't believe, even for one minute. Nor do I believe him for one minute. I would rather that a legislator like this just keep his mouth shut and pollute less.
I used to support the DFL. No More !! This is a corrupt political party. That's not to praise the Republicans.
“You cannot have the voters go to the polls and approve something at the ballot and then ignore it. That is not acceptable,” Winkler said.
This is EXACTLY what Winkler did when he voted for the stadium bill, which was designed to do what he specifically claims is "...not acceptable.". (Bend over, Minneapolis voters - you and your silly charter are such a bother !!)
Winkler's high-minded pronouncements are written on toilet paper - USED toilet paper.
Very entertaining column, keep ‘em coming.
The funniest part of this story is how impressed the delegates were with the economics background of that high school teacher, enough to nominate him.
During the recent stadium debate, when Rep. King Banian, a real economist with specific expertise in the economics of sports stadiums, spoke rationally and in opposition to the House, the proponents completely ignored his advice as irrelevant. You might say it was to their credit that...
...and his well-reasoned argument about the financing of the stadium. It mattered as little to them as to the Republicans.
The Democrats have the primary responsibility for this monument to corporate welfare.
I actually tuned in to much of the floor debate, House and Senate. Not that these floor debates were anything more than theatrics. When somebody made a well-reasoned and thoughtful point against the bill, such as King Banian did, Rep. Lanning - and later Sen. Rosen in...
I really appreciate all your work on a project that was no small matter - neither technically nor in its potential impact on the viewer who wants to know what's going on in the Legislature.
Here's the thing that's bothering me: you've got a "Controversial" category where you put the stadium bill. OK, let's not quibble with the category. But visually, it looks not terribly different in SIZE when compared with numerous other categories which involved no more than a small fraction of...
He just wants his bosses to know that HE knows which side his, and the Strib's, bread is buttered on.
There is not a SINGLE PERSON in our out of government who knows what the true final cost to taxpayers of this giveaway will be.
"...closely inspected."? When all the key meetings and discussions were held out of sight of the public, where the people taking part shuffled in and out of those rooms specifically to evade
the provisions of the Open Meeting Law?
We have the best government money can buy.
