I really enjoyed the VW Super Bowl ad, but knew immediately that some woudl consider it racist. No matter what, "some" will always consider racial humor racist (there's a difference). I see little difference between this and an ad where everyone who eats Grey Poupon taking up a sophisticated British accent. VW makes people happy... who best typifies happy people? Jamaicans. This is a compliment, not an insult! I don't see the 'hot potato' in this.

If this type of over-the-top caution...

Posted on 02/19/13 at 03:21 pm in response to Cities or suburbs: Searching for the new land of opportunity

So, jobs is the answer? Not sure what question this article is trying to answer. Yes, there are jobs in suburbs and cities, and people move to the suburbs or cities because of said jobs - nothing new here. And if small cities blur the line between cities and suburbs, and people are moving in large numbers to suburbs, small cities, and large cities, shouldn't the question be suburbs AND cities, versus the combative narrative of suburbs OR cities?

Additionally, young people are only one...

Is this news or opinion? I can't tell. The tone of this article, like many of Ms Harris' before, carry undertones of teenage snarkiness. There are some very interesting points that she touches on, but the issues fail to overcome the desire to inject cynicism where good journalism should be. I'm happy to see that MinnPost attempts to address serious planning issues in the Twin Cities, but I wish Ms Harris would take these topics a little more seriously.

Posted on 06/12/12 at 03:20 pm in response to A day in the life of Nice Ride bikes

This is a fantastic animation and a perfect use of data visualization! A few comments/questions. I know the program was expanded into Saint Paul last year. Is the animation from a specific day that preceded Saint Paul being included in the system? It also appears that there are no rides in North Mpls. Also, it seems that the "popularity" (however defined) in terms of route choice might is weighted too heavily over of the shortest pratical distance for riders. For example, it appears that...

Posted on 05/23/11 at 03:33 pm in response to The mystery of why we're seeing more tornadoes in Minnesota

One explanation is certainly the technology to detect and identify where tornadoes hit. Tornadoes in rural areas, especially smaller ones, may have gone unreported in the 1980s.

Another explanation for the damage caused by them might be the sprawling development of our cities. The growth rate of developed area in the Twin Cities has significantly outpaced population growth since the 1980s.

Granted, the location of the North Minneapolis tornado is in a very old part of the city...

"Government is divinely ordained to provide order and security and maximize personal freedoms, … Government should only do for people things they shouldn't do for themselves or can't do reasonably."

Building off of Beard's quote... Just like building new highways, enhancing transitways, expanding bicycle networks, and encouraging livable communities are all things that the individual is incapable of doing on their own, and where the government can step in, alone or with a private/...
