The central problem with the Citizens United ruling, and which causes the revulsion that Americans feel toward it, is the assumption that corporations are persons. Most Americans would believe that an individual human citizen has the right to political free speech.
Corporations are not natural persons; they are a pooling of individual resources granted an identity and legal sanction by the government, not by God or nature. Corporations cannot vote, yet granting them political...
Not long ago, the blogosphere was news, now the commentariat gets its chance.
When the wealthiest Americans retain more income because of lower tax rates, they will invest the savings in places with the lowest cost of labor and capital goods. That is, overseas, China, India, etc. These lower taxes take money out of the U.S. economy. And since the money is moved to areas with low labor costs, jobs are lost here at home. Thus the rich get richer and the middle class erodes.
Freedom is upheld by institutions protecting the rights of all Americans and, as the constitution puts it, promoting the general welfare.
"Net neutrality" is not the government regulating each TCP/IP packet, but rather the government protecting the rights of all citizens to access any TCP/IP packet choose. It would prevent a corporate stranglehold on individual liberty and and freedon of choice.
The interstate highway system, funded by the government and built by private...
The author alludes to the conflict between compassionate elder care and K-12 education. This is the biggest dilemma facing legislators going into the future. Both constituencies have legitimate and growing needs that are funded from the same pot of money. This could lead to conflict, with the two sides fighting each other for resources. A better approach would be for the social services and education to come together and work together to ensure that the needs get met.

No Child Left Behind is a clever scheme to completely destroy public education by 2014. In that year, every school in the country will, by law, have every student performing at 100% of grade level - or suffer the consequences. Normal variations in human intelligence, from genious to retarded, make this impossible. Yet that's the law. And what will replace public schools? Private schools, which are exempt from NCLB testing? Private schools, which can charge whatever they like for...
Colin Lee,
Minnesota education policy is completely in the control of the governor in power. He appoints the Commissioner of Education, and ensures that the commissioner carries out the governor's wishes. The education policies of the governor are those of his party; for the next few month, this is Governor Pawlenty and the Republican Party.
Minnesota is the only state in the union without an elected or representative statewide school board or education commission....
The United States became independent in 1776. The constitution was fully ratified in 1791. Whether it was the intention of the framers or not, Washington had been a United States citizen for more than 14 years before taking office.
One other possibility for the 14 year requirement is that Hamilton moved to the U.S. in 1772, and the 14 year requirement would have allowed him to be president even though he was not born in the U.S.
Straight out of Article 2 Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution:
"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.
The father of our country was grandfathered in.
The best outcome of the new T.P. caucus is that Michele Bachmann will have painted herself in a corner. On the other hand, she's smart enough to prevent that situation should grassroots Americans turn on the T.P. movement's funder and true leaders (by reading the link in Jon's post), and proves it with her statement "I’m the chairwoman of the ‘listening ear’ — that’s what I am — but I’m not speaking on behalf of the Tea Party." Bachmann will take the credit, but not the blame, for her...
