Posted on 12/10/09 at 01:24 pm in response to Minnesota Daily investigates Gopher wrestling program

i can rest a little bit easier tonight knowing that the Daily has uncovered the practice of coaches selling college rental properties at market rates to their former athletes who then rent them to current athletes at rates other students pay for comparable units.

one coach even sold a property to a former player FOR THE SAME PRICE HE PAID FOR IT. if it was done recently, he's gouging the buyer, of course.

and i'm glad they put the coaches' photos up in full color and giant...

Doug, why do you point out twice in your column that one candidate was DFL endorsed but that the other candidate(s) also listed DFL as his or her party on the ballot?

City law says you can show your affiliation on the ballot. Endorsement is used in ads and articles running up the the election. It's pretty simple and clear - but your mentioning it twice makes it seem like you think something is afoot. I don't get it (in previous system, during primaries, the same system was used -...

Posted on 10/13/09 at 03:17 pm in response to Twins won't win championships without more championship players

i totally agree with the attitude (for any team in any sport) of, "is this how we are/build/become a champion?". something like that. the goal should always be to win the championship. sometimes it's unrealistic in the short term (t-wolves). and sometimes you are a couple of players away, conceivably (twins). and addition-by-subtraction may be the twins' way.

i like carlos gomez. is a tough spot as it may blow up his confidence to send him to AAA next year - but he also...

Posted on 10/06/09 at 12:16 pm in response to Vikings writer blasts Rybak for being honest

the problem was, for me, that rybak wasn't asked about moss - it was just him trying to get in a cutesy line. but it was at a person's expense. he wouldn't call a resident of minneapolis who did the same things Moss did (with the traffic cop, or anything else) a "jerk", would he? this many years later? as in, "john jackson of south minneapolis is a jerk." i hope not, at least. i like rybak, and i also think this was a little bit classless.

Posted on 08/06/09 at 02:03 pm in response to New TCF Bank Stadium ready to rouse -- and wow -- Gopher faithful

the new stadium is wondeful. i love it.

naysayers need to get a hobby that doesn't include trolling positive articles to rant about the end of civilization.

i work full-time at the U and take courses part-time - i'm well aware of how one dollar spent here effects another spent or not-spent there. and while the whole deal of big-time college sports may be absurd and/or irrational, there is evidence that fielding a good team in a nice, on campus stadium does a lot more for a...

two center fielders, six mediocre starters - why not trade one of the above, along with a prospect, to upgrade ANYwhere on the roster? middle infield and right handed relief are obvious needs, but an upgrade in left field - or a true, number one or even number two starter would really bolster this lineup.

the division - and thus a shot at a world series title - is there for the taking (yes, they are saying the same thing in chicago and detroit - all the more reason to make a move...

Posted on 06/24/09 at 12:16 pm in response to What if Obama said he was "royally cheesed off" about Iran

of course, many are assuming that the election was rigged/stolen in the first place. but i've yet to see proof that this is the case - reputable polling had the winner ahead 2-1 with two weeks to go - and only media we get is out of parts of tehran that definitely do not reflect the makeup of the country as a whole.

just because the iranian president is a woman hating, homophobic tool doesn't meant that the election was rigged. but it's pretty convenient for the neocons and pro-...

"yay for false hustle". good line.

i like that gardenhire, btw, threw in the line about ayala not being a bad guy - and wish the strib would have included it in their summary - makes it all sound less harsh and more of a "different philosophy" sort of thing.

you can't blame a guy for being upfront and honest about how he's viewing his own career, contract and role. and, it looks like he'll get his way - so, it worked - can go to pittsburgh or elsewhere and prove if he is or...

Posted on 05/15/09 at 12:39 pm in response to Twins pick worst option: benching Carlos Gomez in favor of Delmon Young

late in a close game and, say, Kubel, Young or Cuddyer gets on base, Gardy can bring in Gomez to pinch run AND stay in to play defense. Thus his weak bat is taken out of the equation barring extra innings, usually.

Also, Kubel is swinging too good a bat to share DH duties with Young too often. Now, he may share them with Mauer (and either sit or play left field, thus giving Young and Gomez even less chances to play), but he won't and shouldn't be sitting for Young too often.

Posted on 04/29/09 at 03:16 pm in response to Coleman/Franken and the signing of the certificate: Did Pawlenty budge?

so, does pawlently think that he should never sign an election certificate for any election if any lawsuit has been filed over it in federal court (and until the court has ruled on said lawsuit)? that would be an interesting take, for sure.
