Woodbury has good government that delivers good services and those include good inspection and regulation of buildings and construction. I'll put my home up against yours any day - the engineered timbers that are solid and straight, the pilasters that make the foundation sturdy, the excellent insulation and the air exchange with heat recovery, and the location - safe, with excellent walkability, well-maintained trails, underground electricity and cable, and the easy commute - not all of us...

Yes, Romney is trying to walk back Ryan's impractical and virtually unsalable right wing ideologically-driven record: "Romney must be prepared to refocus his message." Watch for oodles of redirection as he tries to save this truly awful choice.

Posted on 07/06/12 at 01:58 pm in response to Think you know what's in the Affordable Care Act? Try this quiz

It was hard to find the link. Elementary web design dictates that the word "here" is a poor choice for a link, because people who use assistive technology like screenreading software will hear the word "here" instead of "You'll find the quiz here"... It is just as easy to do it right with Drupal as not, so file this away in your toolkit, MNPOST. As for the quiz itself, it brings to mind the one that tests knowledge of religions and finds that atheists score highest. It makes the heads of...

Posted on 06/11/12 at 12:24 pm in response to What’s better for old people: city or suburb?

Ray's excellent post says a lot about how "it ain't necessarily so" that city living will be more convenient for aging boomers. My wife and I have talked it over, and our plan is to age in place here in Woodbury. We do drive, but our present location isn't as far removed from shopping and services as one might think. When I grew up in Mankato, we lived in the city proper - but had only a small ma & pa grocery store in the vicinity. Google Maps makes it easy to compare what we have today...

Taken directly from Mr. Bills' website: "Political virtue takes place when politicians make decisions based on self-interest rather than in service to the Constitution and people they represent."

If one can get past the hackneyed GOP talking points and the weak grammar on the site, one might wonder why there is no mention of the glowing virtue of the free market, where individuals and corporations always set aside self-centered greed and short-term profit to instead build better...

Posted on 04/27/12 at 05:39 pm in response to Few if any pro-stadium votes from Minneapolis DFLers

The back and forth, on again, off again nature of the stadium process tells us that there really is not a solid consensus for building a stadium. This is further reinforced by the Byzantine nature of the funding plans that have cropped up and keep getting thrown back and forth. The fact of the matter is that the economy is not a solid, sure thing by any means - and people are instinctively (and rightly) cautious about spending on such an enormous discretionary project. Since the bonds...

Carrying a firearm into the cockpit is not necessary, as Bernice suggests. The problem with firearms in general is that they are dangerous (duh) and thus must be handled with care. Sky Marshals whose job it is to provide security and who train regularly with their firearms should be the ones with the guns. Pilots, who would only carry guns incidental to their many other duties, are more likely to become complacent, which could cause an accidental discharge in the pressurized cabin.

I don't think the number of issues the DNR must deal with is shrinking any more than the number of lakes and rivers. The logic of "...given the shrinking number of hunters and fishermen every year, why does the DNR need more money to run their operation..." is just about the same as figuring that a highway that has a lower relative traffic count need not be plowed every time we get a dump of snow or that a school with a slightly smaller student count than the previous year need only be...
