Redefining Progress, an Oakland, CA organization, has developed the Genuine Progress Index (GPI) as an alternative to GDP. The work of economist Herman Daly is also on point regarding this issue. To see just how irrational it is to use GDP as a measure of well-being, consider the gigantic boost to GDP that Japan will benefit from as the Fukushima reactors continue to melt down.
