Earlier this week, ARENA Dances ran through artistic director Mathew Janczewski’s new piece, “POP.” Wearing aqua, lime green or purple short-shorts and white hoodies painted with the same colors, the 14 dancers (seven company members, and seven apprentices largely from the University of Minnesota dance program) bounced, shimmied and grooved to music selected by DJ Alexander East.
The piece definitely had a late-’80s, early ’90s club vibe. In other words, the one-on-one dancing had a sensual quality, but was pretty tame compared to the grinding that goes on in clubs today. Janczewski said his inspiration for “POP” was his club-going in the early 90s, and in choreographing the new piece he just wanted to give his dancers an opportunity to let go, have fun and dance to some great music.
Also on the program is the repertory work “resonance,” set to music by Bjork. Since the work premiered in the 2003 Fringe Festival, it’s become a hands-down favorite of ARENA fans for its emotional intelligence, physical acuity and dark beauty.
